Hoshimachi Suisei

Hoshimachi Suisei (星街すいせい)[2] is a Japanese virtual YouTuber (VTuber). A self-proclaimed idol, she began posting videos as an independent virtual YouTuber in March 2018. In May 2019, she became affiliated with Hololive Production.[3] Her activity consists primarily of live streaming herself singing, playing video games, or creating original illustrations.

As of February 2021, she has over 730,000 subscribers on YouTube.[1] She was the fourth streamer and first VTuber on bilibili to acquire over 1,000 jiànzhǎng, viewers who donate over 198 renminbi to a particular streamer every month. Outside Youtube and bilibili, she appeared on Japanese television and radio programs as a virtual personality. As a singer, she released a digital single "NEXT COLOR PLANET" which ranked 5th as an Oricon daily digital single ranking.

Career

Hoshimachi Suisei created her YouTube channel on 18 March 2018[4][5] and revealed her initial character design, created and rigged by herself, on Twitter that same day.[6][7] She posted her first video to YouTube on 22 March 2018, debuting as an independent virtual YouTuber and self-proclaimed idol.[6][8][9] This was followed on 30 April with her first song cover.[10] She joined the VTuber agency S:gnal on 2 July 2018, but left a month later on 4 August.[11] She released her first original song, "comet", on 22 November 2018.[12]

On 19 May 2019, Hoshimachi joined Hololive Productions via INoNaKa Music (イノナカミュージック), its newly created music label, with VTuber AZKi.[13][14][15] She announced on Twitter on 28 November 2019 that she would be transferring to the all-female Hololive agency.[16] Cover Corp., Hololive's parent company, also officially announced the transfer on 29 November, to be carried out on 1 December. Hoshimachi also received a new Live2D model[17] built by Live2D animator rariemonn[18] based on an updated character design by Teshima Nari.[19]

In October 2019, Hoshimachi started livestreaming on bilibili. On 17 March 2020, her number of jiànzhǎng (舰长, or "captains", viewers who donate over 198 renminbi to a particular streamer every month), surpassed 1,000. She was the fourth streamer and first VTuber on the platform to reach that milestone.[20]

Hoshimachi performed in the "Hololive 1st fes. Nonstop Story" concert at the Toyosu PIT on 24 January 2020 with every member of Hololive at that time. 3D debuts for Hoshimachi and fellow Hololive members Houshou Marine and Shiranui Flare were also teased at the concert.[21] Hoshimachi reached the 100,000 subscriber milestone on YouTube on 31 January 2020.[22] She debuted her 3D model, created by Yatsurugi,[23] on 1 March 2020.[24][7] This stream was watched by 55,000 live viewers and its associated Twitter hashtag was at one point the top trending hashtag in the world.[25]

On 22 March 2020, Hoshimachi released a single "NEXT COLOR PLANET" which ranked 5th as an Oricon daily digital single ranking.[26][27]

Activity

Hoshimachi's activity consists primarily of live streaming herself singing, playing video games, or creating original illustrations.[20][9] Hoshimachi has created illustrations for hers and other VTubers' channels,[28] and has worked as a video editor for VTubers from Re:AcT and Hololive.[29][30]

The nickname Hoshimachi used for fans was Kometomo (こめとも) (a pun meaning "comet friends") until 19 May 2019, when they became the Hoshiyomi (星詠み) ("stargazers").[31]

Radio

On 5 April 2020, Hoshimachi became a radio personality with the advent of MUSIC SPACE of Hoshimachi Suisei (ホロライブ presents 星街すいせいのMUSIC SPACE), a weekly internet radio program for Cho A&G+ (超A&G+) of Nippon Cultural Broadcasting.[32][9]

Hoshimachi appeared on Encouraging Japan with Music! (Ongaku de Nihon wo Ageru!), another Nippon Cultural Broadcasting radio production, on 17 June 2020, and broadcast the first live studio performance by VTubers in Japanese radio history with Mokota Mememe and Hanabasami Kyō.[33][34]
