A forward, English began his career with St Mirren in the 1980s, but he was unable to break into the first time and moved to Partick Thistle, with whom he made over 100 league appearances and scores fifteen goals in six years.
In 1995, he joined St Johnstone, but his stay at McDiarmid Park was short. The following year he signed for Ayr United, where he scored seven goals in 18 appearances.
English's fifth club was Stranraer, whom he joined in 1997. He went on to play for four other clubs - including a return to Partick - before hanging up his boots with Dumbarton in 2004.
