Jagir Kaur

'Bibi Jagir Kaur was born in the small village “Bhatnura Lubana” of district. Jalandhar in the year 1954. She completed her graduation in Maths and Economics from GCW college of Chandigarh and B.Ed.from MGN college of Education Jalandhar. After completed her studies ,she served as a Govt. Teacher in Govt. Girl’s School , Begowal for 11 years . She got married with Late. S. Charanjit Singh who was the son of Late Bawa Harnam Singh ( Former Forest Minister of Punjab) . Then she got blessed with two daughters Harpreet Kaur & Rajneet Kaur. After only three happy years of marriage, her struggle started when her husband passed away in the year 1983 leaving behing two very small daughters. Then , She resigned from her job and dedicated her life in the service of the people. She became Head of Gurudwara Sant Prem Singh ji, Begowal( Holy shrine that represents Lubana Community ref.to Baba Makhan Shah Lubana ) .

Political career

She stepped into politics and joined SAD in 1989 ( Shiromani Akali Dal) in the year in 1992, Akali Dal boycotted the Punjab assembly elections and kept itself away from this war of elections.

After this tenure, in 1996, she got ticket from Akali Dal Badal to contest from Bholath constituency for SGPC elections and remained winner with the difference of 15052 votes.

This success was proven as her entry step into politics, as in 1997 she fought her first ever Punjab assembly Elections from Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) ticket and created a benchmark by being winner with the difference of 28027 votes . She also became Cabinet Minister of Punjab Govt.She held the portfolio of Department of Social welfare of women & Children & Tourism & Cultural Affairs) even at her initial stage. That time she was just 43 years old .

1999- A time came, while performing her duties for Sant Baba Prem Singh Ji' which is a religious organization, she got a chance to create a history on 16 March 1999, when she was elected as the First woman president of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee-(SGPC) Amritsar.

Year 2000, remained sorrowful for BibiJi, as her elder daughter Harpreet Kaur died . This tragedy took her to a traumatic shock.

In year 2002, she again contested from Bholath constituency and remained winner with notable difference of 13500 votes.

Also ,in the year 2006, Bibi Jagir Kaur Ji once again got a chance to serve for SGPC from SAD (Badal) and contested for SGPC elections and remained winner for third time and became Member SGPC.

Again in year 2007, she contested from Bholath constituency , she lost the elections whereas this time she became the chairperson of District Planning Committee of Kapurthala.

This was the fourth time when Bibi Jagir Kaur remained winner in the Assembly elections of 2012 from Bholath constituency. She became Cabinet Minister under that time's government. Once again she remarked her presence by becoming the Only female candidate who sworn as a cabinet minister among whole cabinet of Government .

That time she got a chance to serve for water supply and sanitation department of Punjab under the concerned ministry.

Bibi Jagir Kaur to be elected for the third time as the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), an organisation that manages historic Sikh shrines and some educational institutions in the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

Ms. Kaur's name was put forward by the senior Akali leader, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, and seconded by another SGPC member, Harswinder Singh. There were no other contenders. She had held the same post from March 1999 to November 2000, when she resigned amid allegations that she was involved in the murder of her daughter.[1] The post became vacant since the death of the Akali stalwart, Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who served for 26 terms. Politics

Jagir Kaur is an active member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, a Sikh political party with a strong following in Punjab. She joined the party in 1995 and was shortly thereafter appointed member of the party's working committee. In 1997, she was elected from the Bholath constituency in Kapurthala district. She was appointed Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister in addition to holding the portfolios of social welfare, development of women and children welfare in the Parkash Singh Badal Cabinet. She resigned the post of minister when she was appointed as the President of the SGPC. Her rise was meteoric, rising from the position of a teacher in Mathematics to the post of President of the SGPC.[4]

Death of Daughter

Jagir Kaur's daughter Harpreet Kaur was found dead under mysterious circumstance on 20 April 2000.[5] The Central Bureau of Investigation managed the case, widely perceived to be an honor killing ordered by Jagir Kaur in response to her daughters elopement; Jagir Kaur was eventually sentenced to 5 years rigorous imprisonment for her role in the death of her daughter.[6] the court has acquitted her from all the charges, hence she came out clean after nearly 18 years of struggle of Court Case on 4 December 2018.[7]
