James C. Temerty

James ("Jim", né Constantin) C. Temerty CM is an entrepreneur, business executive and philanthropist from Toronto, Canada. Temerty founded Northland Power in 1987, a global independent power producer, and served as Chair until December 2019.[1][2][3]

In addition to his business ventures, Temerty is an active philanthropist, locally, nationally, and abroad. He and his wife, Louise, established the Temerty Foundation in 1997.

In September 2020, the Foundation gave $250 million to the University of Toronto, naming the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and representing the single largest one-time donation in Canadian history at the time of the announcement.[4]

Professional career

In 1987, Temerty founded Northland Power, one of Canada’s first and still pre-eminent independent power producers. Publicly traded since 1997, Northland's common shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange with a market cap exceeding $7 billion, as of September 2020.[5]

Philanthropy

In September 2020, the Foundation gifted $250 million to the University of Toronto, naming the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and representing the single largest one-time donation in Canadian history at the time of the announcement. The donation was made to support discovery, collaboration, innovation and equity across the Faculty and its affiliated hospital network, advancing its leadership as a global centre of excellence in human health and health care.[6] In April 2020, $10-million of the gift to Faculty of Medicine’s Dean’s COVID-19 Priorities Fund, which was advanced and pre-announced to support front-line clinical faculty members and trainees fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.[7]

Awards and honours

Temerty’s entrepreneurial career and philanthropic activities have been recognized with many distinguished honours.

  • Appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contributions to society, 2008.[8]
  • Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Canada, 2010.[9]
  • The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal to honour him for his contributions to his country, 2012.
  • Temerty was the first recipient of the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Medal, an award established to recognize contributions to the cause of Ukrainian-Jewish understanding and cooperation, 2013.[10]
  • Temerty and his wife had a new genus and species of raptor dinosaur named in their honour, the Acheroraptor temertyorum, 2013.[11]
  • Honoured by Ukrainian President Poroshenko with Ukraine’s Order of Yaroslav the Wise, which is the highest tribute Ukraine can confer to a foreign citizen who has not been a head of state, 2016.[12]
  • Temerty and his wife were awarded the Tryzub award for community leadership, 2019.[13]
  • Shem Tov Award for his significant contributions through the founding and work of the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter, 2019.
  • Temerty was awarded three honorary doctorates (LL.D.) from York University, Ryerson University, and the University of Western Ontario.[14][15][16] The latter two, he shares with his wife.
