James Hoffmann

James Alexander Hoffmann (born 11 December 1979[1]) is an English businessman, author, barista, online influencer and coffee consultant.

Early life

Born in 1979, in Stafford, Staffordshire, Hoffmann grew up in the Lake District.[2][3] He is a graduate of Durham University.[4] One of his first jobs after graduating was working for Gaggia in Selfridges, where a chance encounter with a TV producer led to him featuring on Trick or Treat, hosted by Derren Brown.[5][6] Hoffmann later moved to work at La Spaziale, as the national training manager for the UK.[7]

Hoffmann first came to prominence after winning the World Barista Championship in 2007. Afterwards, he went on to co-found Square Mile Coffee Roasters in 2008, a London-based speciality coffee company,[8] and in 2014, he published The World Atlas of Coffee.[9] The book discusses coffee varieties, growing methods, roasting, and preparation with a focus on origin, cataloguing the coffees grown in 29 different countries.[9] Since 2018 he has gained popularity on the online video-sharing platform YouTube, with his channel garnering over 700,000 subscribers.[10] His channel primarily discusses the specialty coffee industry, reviews coffee equipment and evaluates different brewing methods. Hoffmann has worked with a number of businesses globally within the coffee sector as a consultant, including California-based, eco-friendly coffee roasting equipment manufacturer Bellwether Coffee.[11]
