Janet Taylor Pickett

Janet Taylor Pickett (born August 13, 1948)[2] is an American artist. Pickett's mixed media works are inspired her life as an African American woman. Her work has been exhibited at the Phillips Collection, Montclair Art Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art and is held in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Fogg Museum.

Early life and education

Janet Taylor Pickett was born in 1948 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.[2] She attended the University of Michigan School of Art and Design where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in fine art. She also studied art at the Vermont Studio Center, Parsons School of Design, and the Fashion Institute of Technology.[1]

Career

Pickett is a mixed media artist, using various techniques including sculptural, installation, painting, assemblage, and collage. Her work is inspired by her life as an African American woman.[1] Pickett's work is held in the collection of the Washington State Arts Commission.[3] Senator Kamala Harris is a collector of Pickett's work.[1] Harris displays one of Pickett's pieces in her Washington, D.C. office.

Pickett taught at the Essex County College in New Jersey for over 30 years.[3]
