Jari Silomäki

Jari Silomäki is a Finnish artist born in Parkano, Finland, in 1975. He lives and works in Helsinki and is part of The Helsinki School represented by Persons Projects, Berlin.[1] Atlas of Emotions, Silomäki's broadest solo exhibition to date, opened at the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki in September 2020.[2]

The photographer finds his roots in classical documentary photography, which he then poetically twists to create his own personal narrative that expands the realms of fact and fiction.[3] Investigating everyday life from several angles, he manages to connect private thoughts with the outside world, mixing the local and the global. The diary-like sequences of his ongoing series My Weather Diary (2001-) serve as telling interludes in a personal narrative.[3] Those captured photographic moments carry their own storyline that he then joins with notes in calligraphy which he wrote by hand on top of the completed print: this hand-written text adds both a nostalgic tone and a special value to what was said. Along with the location, he describes a mood, the day's most memorable political world news or an event from his personal life.[4] Silomäki gives the viewer both a possibility of sharing his private experiences in the landscape where he was that day and a possibility of a collective experience by registering world-political events that the viewer remembers, too.[1]

The focal point of Silomäki's work has for two decades been the positioning of the individual within the societal narrative of the times. Through subtle and private stories, he shows us the true faces of grand geopolitical twists and turns using narrative documentary photography, intimately coupled with textual expression. Silomäki's series are born through years of observation, investigation, construction, and artistic portrayals. He draws themes and inspiration from his own life and the lives of those he encounters, embracing the life stories of strangers he meets on the street or online.[2]
