History

Origins

The site was in 1689 divided into two properties. No. 149 was owned by brewer Hans Mikkelsen. No. 150 was owned by brewer Søren Pedersen. They had by 1756 been merged into a single property as (No. 132) owned by brewer Oluf Beck. The buildings on the property were destroyed in the Copenhagen Fire of 1795.

Snaren's Quarter, No. 87

The current building was built in 1795-1796 for merchant and brewer Jens Lauritzen. The architect was probably Andreas Kirkerup. The property was in the new cadastre of 1806 listed as Snaren's Quarter, No. 87 and was by then owned by Lauritzen's widow.

Nytorv 7-11 in 1908

With the introduction of house numbering in Copenhagen in 1859, Snaren's Quarter, No. 87 became Nytorv 7. The building was at the time of the 1860 census home to a total of 26 people.[1] Sophie Emilie, Baroness Knuth (née Brüel, 1798-1866) resided as a widow with her sister on the first floor.[2] Andreas Peter Thomsen (1781-) resided in the building as a widower with an unmarried daughter, his sister-in-law, a foster sister, a lodger and two maids.[3]

General Cai Hegermann-Lindencrone (1807-1893) lived in the building from 1862 to 1864. National bank director Moritz Levy (1824-1892) lived in the building from 1868,[4]

Architecture

The building consists of three storeys over a cellar and is seven bays wide. The five central bays are slightly recessed. Four ionic order pilasters flank the three central bays. A side wing extends from the rear side of the building. In the courtyard is a five-storey warehouse.

Today

The building is owned by Nordea. The tenants include the Association of Folk High Schools in Denmark. The warehouse in the courtyard houses a travel agency.
