Abbas was born at Longsight in Manchester. He made his debut in minor counties cricket for Cheshire in the 1999 MCCA Knockout Trophy against the Lancashire Cricket Board.[1] A fortnight later he played in a List A one-day match against the Surrey Cricket Board in the 1999 NatWest Trophy at Wimbledon.[2] In a match which Cheshire won by 9 runs, Abbas scored 6 runs before he was dismissed by Chris Bullen.[3] Later in that season he played his first Minor Counties Championship against Devon.[4] He played minor counties cricket for Cheshire until 2002, making three appearances in the Minor Counties Championship and five in the MCCA Knockout Trophy.[4][1]
