Joana Hadjithomas

Joana Hadjithomas (Arabic: جوانا حاجي توما, Greek: Ιωάννα Χατζηθωμά) is a Lebanese film director, screenwriter, and artist. She collaborates with Khalil Joreige producing works that create thematic links between photography, video, performance, installation, sculpture, and cinema.

Film

Hadjithomas and Joreige have directed numerous films that have been shown and awarded in the most prestigious international film festivals including ISMYRNA (2016); The Lebanese Rocket Society: The Strange Tale of The Lebanese Space Race (2012), which received multiple awards such as Best Documentary Award in Doha Tribeca Festival, Qatar; Khiam 2000-2007 (2008); Je veux voir (I Want To See) (2008), starring Catherine Deneuve and Rabih Mroué, which premiered in the official selection of Cannes Film Festival in 2008 and was awarded Best Singular Film by the French Critics Guild. A Perfect Day (2005) is one of their most acclaimed films, and earned them the Don Quixote Award and the FIPRESCI Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival.[1] They also received acclaim for Around the Pink House, which was Lebanon's official Best Foreign Language Film submission at the 72nd Academy Awards, but did not manage to receive a nomination.[2]Their latest feature film, Memory Box will be released in 2021.

Hadjithomas was selected to be on the jury for the Cinéfondation and short films sections of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.[3]

Art

Hadjithomas and Joreige are known for their long-term research works focusing on the fabrication of images, the construction of imaginaries, and the writing of history.[4] In 2017, they were awarded the Marcel Duchamp Prize for their installation Unconformities presented at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris).[5][6]

Their artworks are part of major private and public collections and they have presented their works in solo and group exhibitions in museums and art centers around the world, such as Ashkal Alwan (Beirut), Haus der Kunst (Munich), HOME (Manchester), IVAM (Valencia), Jeu de Paume (Paris), KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Berlin), MIT List Visual Arts Center (Cambridge), MOMA (New York), Museum of Modern Art (Paris), Red Brick Art Museum (Beijing), SFMOMA (San Francisco), Singapore Art Museum, Sharjah Art Foundation (UAE), Tate Modern (London), The Powerplant (Toronto), Villa Arson (Nice), Whitechapel Gallery (London), and ZKM (Karlsruhe). Joreige and Hadjithomas have participated at the 9th Gwangju Biennale (2012).[7] They also participated in many biennials such as Taipei, Venice, Istanbul, Lyon, Sharjah, Kochi, and the Paris Triennale.

They are represented by In Situ – fabienne leclerc[8] in Paris (France), and The Third Line[9] in Dubai (UAE).

Publications and lectures

Both artists are also authors of publications and artists books such as Latent images, Rosascape (2010)[10] and Beirut, Urban Fictions, Mind the Gap, (1997). They both regularly present lecture-performances such as Aida Save Me and Latent Images. Together, they are often invited as university lecturers in Lebanon and Europe.[11]

Hadjithomas was previously a member of the Pedagogical Committee of the Home Workspace Program at Ashkal Alwan.[12]
