Cregg is the daughter of Brendan and Geraldine.[2] She hails from Cloonfad.[2] After attending NUI Galway, she began work as a surgical intern at University Hospital Galway in April 2020.[2] In December that year she contracted COVID-19 and experienced the sudden onset of a fever while at work.[2] She had no underlying medical condiitons.[3] She developed a severe headache, aching muscles, had chronic fatigue and struggled to breathe during fits of coughing, which did not begin until the seventh day.[2][3] She lost her senses of taste and smell on Christmas Day and still had not recovered them nearly a month later, at which time she was also still fatigued and had her cough.[3] Despite the broad array of symptoms she did not require admission to hospital.[3]
Cregg's positive COVID-19 test came weeks after she played for Roscommon against Westmeath in an All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies' Football Championship semi-final, after which she reported being in "perfect health".[3]
