Joseph Boyd (sailor)

Joseph Boyd was a sailor in the United States Navy, who took part in Stephen Decatur's expedition into Tripoli harbor during the First Barbary War.

Boyd enlisted in the Navy 4 April 1803 as a steward. On 16 February 1804 he took part in the expedition which burned Philadelphia following her capture by the Tripolitanians. Boyd later became a clerk.

Namesake

In 1942, the destroyer USS Boyd (DD-544) was named in his honor.
