Kami-Akasaka Castle

The Kami-Akasaka Castle is a 14th-century castle in Osaka, Japan. It is now largely ruins with little remaining evidence of the original structure.[1]

History

Kusunoki Masashige built the castle in 1332, in the midst of his conflict with the Kamakura Shogunate. The castle was surrounded by a deep valley on three sides. Masashige had formed relations with local merchants, and had convenient financial concessions with the shōgun. Kusunoki Masashige escaped Siege of Akasaka castle by the shōgun's forces, by faking his own death. He later raised another army, which regained the castle, though once again had to flee the castle after a second attack by the shogunate. He and his army then retreated, relocating to Chihaya castle.[1][2]
