History

Kenmore-Garfield was opened in 2017 as a result of a merger between the former Kenmore High School and Garfield High School. Both schools were historic staples in the city of Akron, Ohio, with Kenmore High School dating back to 1908 and Garfield High School dating back to 1926.

Kenmore merged with Garfield for the 2017–18 school year due to declining enrollment and rising costs.[2] The school is currently being operated at the former Kenmore High School building in the Akron neighborhood of Kenmore. Akron Public schools will be rebuilding a new Kenmore-Garfield Community Learning Center as part of the districts district's ongoing $800 million renovation and construction program that dates back to 2002.[3] The new CLC will be built on the former Garfield High School site with the tentative building schedule being from the spring of 2020 with an opening date of fall 2022. The new Community Learning Center is projected to be 275,000 sq ft (25,500 m2) and will hold about 1,400 students.[4] While the new building is constructed at the Garfield site,[5] the combined school will be known as Kenmore-Garfield, although it is not certain that will be the final name of the school once the CLC is built.[3]

Athletics

Prior to the merger of the schools, both were a part of the Akron City Series athletic conference. The Kenmore High School Cardinals joined when it was merged into the Akron Public School District in 1929, and Garfield High School Golden Rams joined after it was built in 1926. The Kenmore-Garfield High School retained Garfield's mascot of the "Golden Rams".
