In Kiev Day and Night, a group of young friends rent an apartment named "Quartero" that settled in Kyiv hub to live in socialistic way. During the story, they may encounter persistent romantic, familial, financial and friendship problems resulted from extramarital and multiple sexual partnership, and lack of sensual compromise. These groups are usually attracted to offence others, leading up to vain love, divorce, and serious conflict at what the story said to be "tragic life situations" by some commentators.[4] The principal theme of the title "Kiev" is intended to reflect the city through which the characters "want to conquer it". Kiev Day and Night is strongly censored for having sexually aggressive contents, via using nudity, offensive words and unsimulated sex, though those elements concealed by fog and bleeping mouth.[5][6][7] In the fall of 2018, Novyi Kanal decided to stop broadcasting the series, and it was cancelled in 2019 during the fifth season.[8]

The series used bilingual versions; the first four seasons were Russian but it was replaced with native language Ukrainian in the season 5.

It gained wide negative reception from critics as well as some review aggregators generated within country. For instance, the series gained significant rate increasement by 25%. However, it lost to its approval, and declined by 50% while the season 5 premiered in August 2018, resulted in its cancellation. Novyi Kanal approved rating system, prohibited minors to viewing who are under sixteen years old.[9] Some criticized the storyline is altogether unclear, dissatisfying viewers appeal and climax at all.[10] According to the channel's head of press service, Svitlana Tsybanyova said they were working to broadcast 7 I Roses on behalf of, a similar reality television series.[11]

Development

Setting, production and premise

The series settled in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.[12] During an intermission, camera angles often screen in every fascinating environment of Kyiv, includes plazas, metropolitan places, several entertainment venues (such as nightclubs, hotels, mansions). The residential apartment colloquially refers "Quartero". To give more impression with soap opera-style, directors determine every characters to lodge in this single-unit block. The series in some extent ruled by screenplay; performers expected to act improvisational. Their freedom of speech has kept with frame of storyline. Kiev Day and Night somewhat said to be reminiscent to the Russian television show Dom-2, despite in fact unlikely evocative due to sexuality and taboo agendas. The four seasons director Ksenia Bugrimova said that the series is mainly targeted to young people, thus most characters represented by young actors. She furtherly stated the series encourages support to people who discriminated/abused by their sexual preference, repression, typically LGBT matters, and freedom of expression. It also aimed at the lifestyle of Ukrainian people. Unlike any standard reality shows, the series renowned for unique format of the use of interview; characters have presented to interview during post-scenes whereby the interviewer is unseen—often deemed orchestrated by the production crew.[13]

Bugrimova also maintains the casts' personal name employment depending on their personas while the remaining applied by using different persona names. The filming production began in August 2015.[7]

I think our viewers felt that the stories of the guys came to a logical end. There were a lot of comments: they say, what else? Well, what else could happen to these guys? We love all our heroes who have been with us all these four seasons. They managed to become related and become a family, to feel like parents of the guys. But, probably, in all families there comes a period when children need to be released into free swimming, so that they become better, reach new heights in their lives. The guys grew up and clearly understood what they want from life. And I really hope that at least a tiny percentage of this is the merit of Kiev Day and Night.[14]

Inna Melnik defending public backslash comments regarding the series.
