Kithure A. Kindiki

Kithure Kindiki (Born 16 July 1972 )[1] is a Kenyan politician and a lawyer. He was elected in 2013 General Election to represent Tharaka-Nithi County in the Kenyan Senate. Kindiki was re-elected in 2017 to represent the same county.

Early life

Kindiki was born and raised in Tharaka in Tharaka-Nithi County. He attended Lenana High School and Tharaka Boys High School for his secondary education.

Education

In 2002 he graduated with a Ph.D in International Law from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.The year 2000 he obtained a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law and Democracy from the University of Pretoria, South Africa and in 1998,Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the Moi University, Kenya. He also attended the Advocates' Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies, (Kenya School of Law, 2001) is a requirement in Kenya's Legal Education for one to qualify as an advocate after completing a Bachelors Degree in Law.

Public Service and Consultancy[2]
  • January 2006- to 2012: Head, Department of Public Law & Senior Lecturer of International Law, University of Nairobi.
  • 2004- 2005: Lecturer of Law, University of Nairobi.
  • 1999-2003:Lecturer of Law, Moi University, Kenya. He taught Undergraduate Law students the following courses: Public International Law, Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Dispute Resolution. In this position, he able to conduct teaching and research especially in the areas of public international law and human rights law. Some of the research findings have been published in refereed journals.
  • 2000 (October) to 2001 (March): Resettlement Consultant, Legal Unit/ Division of International Protection, UNHCR, Branch Office for South Africa,[3] Pretoria. The functions of this post required him to carry out legal protection work on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa. He was involved in refugee status determination, advising refugees and asylum seekers on their rights under national and international law and recommending durable solutions for them on a case-by-case basis.
  • 2001 – Present: Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Counsel, International Criminal Court

Political career

He was elected in 2013 as the Senator for Tharaka-Nithi County and re-elected in the subsequent General Election of 2017. He served as the Majority Leader in the Senate durin the 2013-2017 term and served as the Deputy Speaker of the Kenya Senate from August 2017 to 22 May 2020 when he was de-whipped from the position by the Jubilee Party.[4]
