Komikoo.com

Komikoo.com is an Indonesian webcomics community portal. It functions both as a showcase and a communication hub. As a showcase, members of Komikoo.com can upload their arts (stories, comics, illustrations) and later get rated and commented by other members and also by guests. Hopefully the uploaders can get the view of the readers and improve from time to time. As a communication hub, Komikoo.com features chat, shoutbox, forum, and personal messaging. Although they have similar names, Komikoo.com is not affiliated with Komikoo, the Malaysian comic publication, the similarity of their names is unintentional.

History

  • Komikoo.com started its operation in 2009, but the basic idea was conceived back in 2007 in the form of a similarly featured but differently named Komikamu.com webcomics.
  • In early 2010, the second version of the website was launched. This version now featured a "Story" segment, a category into which a comic script writer, a story writer, or even a novelist may upload their works.
  • In November 2010, Komikoo.com won a SparxUp award for Best User Generated Content.[1]
  • Following the award, several mainstream national publications covers the webcomics into their written articles, such as : Detik.com,[2] Kompas,[3] Chip Magazine,[4] and The Jakarta Globe [5]
  • On February 2011, Komikoo.com released a new segment for Illustrations allowing members to upload one-off illustrations as well as comics and stories.

Basic concept

The basic concept of Komikoo.com is to provide an online gallery which is specifically designed for comics and stories. Artists can upload their work onto this website and share it with their readers so they can enjoy the comics with similar experience as reading their offline counterparts. The distribution of comics via the internet was intended to bypass the difficulties and costs of logistics for physical comic distribution in the Indonesian archipelago. It would also make the communication between comic artists, writers, their readers more direct. It is also a place where artist may get improved and improving each other through commenting their arts respectively, sharing knowledge and building a positive community.

Monthly events

Komikoo.com holds monthly events in which the members are expected to create and upload a work using a predetermined theme. The themes are usually derived from current commonly known event/happenings, for example, the event for February 2011 was "Valentine's Day" [6]
