Kuliyapitiya Central College
Central College Kuliyapitiya , is a national school for boys and girls, in the suburb of Kuliyapitiya. Central college, Kuliyapitiya was commenced as a result of the Central School concept of the Honorable Minister of Education C.W.W.Kannangara in 19th century stands still as the “Sath Korala Pahan Tharuwa” to the nation nurturing countless erudite Scholars professionals, patriotic heroes, politicians and well-disciplined citizens who serve for the name of the motherland Sri Lanka. It was established on 3 February 1947 by the government and became a national school. As of 2016 an academic staff of more than 170 is led by Colonal. H.M.N.Herath. Central College Kuliyapitiya is often cited as the lighting glory of Sri Lankan education.
Early history
Following the central school concept of honorable Minister of Education, C.W.W.Kannangara, under the patronage of the government, bi–lingual mix school was inaugurated in Dandagamuwa electoral division on 3 February 1947. This was the 54th and the last Central College, under the Central School concept. Mr.P.Senarath was appointed the first principal of Central College – Kuliyapitiya .The first session was attended by 149 students, 67 more at the following day. There were 551 students on 17 February 1947. Under the patronage of the M.P.I.M.R.A.Iriyagolla, the father of the school, Central College was relocated to the new buildings at Meegahakotuwa on 7 July 1951. The honorable Prime Minister D.S.Senanayeke, declared the buildings open.
Houses
The students are divided among four houses.
Colour •Gemunu - Red •Thissa - Green •Rajasinghe - Yellow •Parackrama - Blue
The houses are named after the four main ancient Sinhala kings of Sri Lanka. An annual track – and – field tournament among these houses is held at the beginning of the first term.
Old Students’ Association
Mr.Lional Lokuliyana, the then principal, conceived the idea of the Central College Old Students’ Association. ( 01/05/1951 – 11/05/1955).In subsequent years the OSA and the School’s administration have co -operated in furthering the development of the college. From initially, the incumbent principal of the school was presided over the OSA.
Old Science Students’ Association and Old Cricketers’ Association are the other established Associations.
