Leo Geurtjens

Peter Leonardus “Leo” Geurtjens (15 March 1924 – 5 April 2020) was a Dutch sculptor.[1]

Zoete Lieve Gerritje

Probably his most known sculpture is the “Zoete Lieve Gerritje”. “Zoete lieve Gerritje” appears as a historical figure of a song about Den Bosch. The in the 1950s tourist office director in Den Bosch wanted to link it more to the city, in which the girl was in his idea a farmer's wife. Geurtjens was asked to create a sculpture, that was placed in the Binnenzijde in 1958.[2]

In Den Bosch he also has the sculpture “Jonas de Walvis” (1965) on the Muntelbrug and in the church of Vinkel you can see reliefs depicting the last supper, the sacrifice of the Cross and the resurrection. In Vught there is “Vrouwke op de fiets” in the Lidwinastraat.[2]

Also in Brabant and North Limburg are artworks of Geurtjens.[2]

He worked for many years as a teacher at the Fontys Academy for “Beeldende vorming” (Visual Education) in Tilburg.

Personal

Geurtjens was born in Horst. Geurtjens was married to Annie Trum. He died in 2020 at the age of 96. [3]
