Penelope returns home to find her daughter Elena arguing with her mother Lydia over a planned quinceañera, after Elena reads that it has misogynistic roots. Penelope challenges Elena to a Lincoln–Douglas debate in which they argue the other's perspective, and tries to concede victory to Elena so that she will have a quinces. In an attempt to prove a point, Elena fails a school test on purpose. Meanwhile, Alex wants to buy five pairs of sneakers but Penelope only allows him to buy one for less than $40. He buys five anyway, planning to keep them clean and then return them. Stressed by her children's actions, Penelope tries to take a recently-prescribed antidepressant but is stopped by Lydia, who believes that she needs her ex-husband Viktor back rather than drugs. They argue until Lydia consoles Penelope. Penelope lets Alex keep the first pair of shoes he bought. She tells Elena that she will not force her to have a quinces but after explaining that she selfishly wanted it to prove that she was succeeding as a single mother, Elena agrees to it.

The family discuss sexism, Elena insisting that Scott's microaggressions and mansplaining is sexist, with Penelope viewing "real" sexism as more overt and Lydia thinking that men and women should embrace their natural differences. Lydia convinces Elena to wear makeup the next day, but she dislikes it and Lydia later upsets her. Scott suggests Penelope's idea as if it were his own, leading to an argument, and Penelope quits when she learns that Scott earns more than her, $30 per hour. She negotiates a raise with Dr. Berkowitz. To apologize, Lydia shows Elena her face without makeup.

Lydia turns to Schneider and disappears the next morning. After talking to Dr. Berkowitz, Penelope realizes she is at church. Lydia talks about her anxieties around her age and her potentially not being useful anymore. Another argument starts when Penelope says that she may stop attending church and is not confident that she believes in God. Lydia explains that God kept Penelope safe every day she was in Afghanistan. Penelope talks about a hard day in Afghanistan when she was inspired by the tennis player Serena Williams. Meanwhile, Elena's friend Carmen, a goth, begins spending all of her time at the Alvarez household.

After Penelope's workmates Lori and Scott forget the balloons and cake for Schneider's birthday, Penelope invites him to dinner out of guilt. Elena is furious during the dinner as Penelope sends Carmen away for the night, but the adults drink and enjoy themselves. Carmen is caught trying to come back in the apartment and the group begin talking about immigration, sparked by Carmen and Elena's immigration project. Schneider reveals that he emigrated illegally from Canada and Lydia talks about coming to America from Cuba under Operación Pedro Pan. Scott believes that people should not migrate illegally and that America is "full up", with Lydia sympathizing. Penelope argues against this. Schneider takes her to live with her brother in Texas. Lydia gives Elena advice about maintaining composure for her friend and Carmen and Elena say an emotional goodbye.

After significant research, Penelope brings Schneider to the car dealership, ready to negotiate with an expected patronizing man. The salesperson Jill Riley takes Penelope by surprise, as a black woman who served in the army. However, they quickly get on and Penelope is happy with the deal she negotiates. Overwhelmed at the last minute by memories in her old car, Penelope opens up to Jill about how her relationship with Viktor ended after he experienced post-traumatic stress from his military experiences. A fair is in town: Alex goes with a friend and Schneider is performing in a band with old friends. Meanwhile, Lydia insists that Elena pick an escort for her quinces. Schneider, Lydia and Dr. Berkowitz arrive back at the apartment after Schneider sustains a minor injury—Lydia and Dr. Berkowitz went together but hid this fact. Someone from the VA answers the phone and Penelope rushes to a shop so she can send a document by fax. At Josh's insistence, Alex steals a pill from Lydia and hides when Elena enters the room. Talking to herself in response to standard medical advice intermittently given by the on hold line, Elena says that she might be attracted to girls and does not want to pick a boy as an escort. When Alex accidentally makes noise, she is furious at him trying to sell drugs but appreciates his laidback attitude towards what he overheard. She injures her foot when a high heel snaps and Leslie examines her; she has a hammer toe.

Elena picks a popular guy in her year—Josh Flores—for her quinces, hoping he will reject her so that she won't have to have a male escort. Josh wants to do it and she invites him over, unsure whether she is attracted to boys. Josh and Elena get along and she kisses him. While at Schneider's, Alex lets slip that Elena might be a lesbian, and also that Elena is alone with a boy. Schneider sends Josh away and the rest of the Alvarez family return home, with Lydia and Penelope's secrets becoming exposed.
