The book brings back memories for Hatori Chise, and she tells the story of when she was a child. After her mother committed suicide, she lived a lonely life with her relatives. Chise continues her story. The magician introduced himself as Riichi Miura, but Chise was shy and afraid. Riichi gives a library card to Chise, allowing her to visit the library and use many books. Meanwhile at home, the situation became worse. One day, Chise asked Miura about a particular book, “Spring Will Be Missed”, but Miura became upset and told her to leave. However, he eventually let her stay, and he chose a book to use for her school report, "The Lonely Little Star". He destroys the card to prevent Chise from visiting the library. Later, Chise visited the house and managed to enter by a basement door, leaving it open. This allowed a plague of rats spirits to enter and consume all books, while the black creature with a white mask which had previously pursued her viciously attacked Miura. As Miura died from his wounds, he asked Chise to deliver his book, "Spring Will Be Missed".

However after giving him the book, "Spring Will Be Missed", she asks him to meet her in the future. Miura says that after he entered the cottage with the library he realized he could not leave. Back in the present, Chise finds Mayumi, who is now an old woman in hospital, and gives her the book for which she is very grateful. Meanwhile, Chise is happy to have received her book, "The Lonely Little Star", and plans to re-read it with different perspective.

Hatori Chise is a lonely teenager who has no family and is shunned by society so she sells herself into slavery. During the auction numerous mages bid large sums of money for her, only for the auction to be interrupted by a strange mage named Elias Ainsworth who immediately outbids every other buyer by bidding 5 Million Pounds. Elias brings Chise to her new home and announces she is to be his apprentice. He then forces her to bathe, during which fairies visit and reveal she is a Sleigh Beggy, a type of mage who unconsciously attracts the love of magical creatures who will help her when she is in need, though help from magical creatures may harm as easily as it helps. That night the fairies convince Chise to walk through the woods where they attempt to kidnap her to spite Elias. After Chise insists on staying with Elias, who is now her family, Elias appears, having known what the fairies were planning and using the opportunity to show Chise a magical creatures idea of “help”. As they return home Elias reveals that, as well as becoming his apprentice he hopes Chise will become his wife.
2"One today is worth two tomorrows."October 14, 2017 (2017-10-14)
Chise awakens having slept for two days after her fairy ordeal. Elias takes Chise shopping to a magus shop disguised as a bookstore; Chise meets the shop’s owner, Angelica Burley, a Magus Craft Artificer, who makes magical tools. When Angelica learns Elias bought Chise as a slave and proposed marriage, she angrily throws him out. Angelica teaches Chise that alchemy is a science that can change reality, while magic is closer to being a miracle capable of bending reality with help from magical creatures. Angelica teaches Chise to magically shape a crystal into a flower. However Chise has a flashback to her mother in a field of flowers, causing the crystal to cover Angelica’s workshop in hundreds of crystal flowers. Elias stops the flowers from spreading. Angelica sells Chise a magical knife, coat and several other magical items. As they return home they meet a priest named Simon Cullum who asks Elias for a favour in return for the Church not interfering in his affairs. Elias suggests they think of the trip as their honeymoon. While travelling to Iceland and seeing the dragon colony, Chise is kidnapped by a man riding on a dragon.
3"The balance distinguishes not between gold and lead."October 21, 2017 (2017-10-21)
Chise is taken to a dragon nesting ground by the youthful mage Lindel, the dragon’s caretaker. Chise meets an elderly dragon called Uncle Nevin, who will die soon, and transform his body into a tree to keep the forest alive. Chise is saddened by this until Uncle Nevin explains dragons are not afraid of dying as all dragons live their lives to the fullest so they will have no regrets. Chise remembers being so alone she considered suicide but Uncle Nevin is glad she chose to live or Elias never would have found her. In his final moments Uncle Nevin shares with her his memories of flying. Elias regrets that as human populations grow Chise may one day be one of the last surviving mages. As Uncle Nevin dies and his body transforms into a tree covered in white flowers he tells Chise that when the time comes and she needs a wand, he would be happy for her to use one of his branches, as thanks for making his final moments happy. Chise feels she has learned something about living a happy life. As they prepare to leave Chise, having expended too much magic sharing memories with Uncle Nevin, collapses.
4"Everything must have a beginning."October 28, 2017 (2017-10-28)
Chise awakens on a train with Elias. They are approached by a cat messenger who informs Elias the Cat King is waiting. Chise learns the rumour she is Elias’s wife has spread across the world. Chise is watched by a mysterious woman before meeting the Cat King, who reveals there is a problem within the kingdom. Elias begins investigating while Chise learns the Kingdom's history. Years ago a man who enjoyed killing cats was killed by the first Cat King and his corrupted soul imprisoned on an island. Chise is kidnapped by the mysterious woman who drops her into the lake. Underwater Chise meets, Mina, a deceased soul who reveals the corrupt soul was her husband, Matthew, who went mad after she died. She asks Chise to free both of them. Elias saves Chise and asks her to cleanse Matthew. Chise prepares her spell but is stopped by the mysterious woman and a man called Renfred, sorcerers who want the corrupted Matthew for other purposes. Renfred accuses Elias of using Chise as a test subject and keeping her prisoner by pretending to make her his apprentice while hiding the truth that Sleigh Beggies have a very limited life span.
5"Love conquers all."November 4, 2017 (2017-11-04)
The mysterious woman, Alice, explains Sleigh Beggies are valuable because they continuously generate magical power, but the strain it puts on the body results in an early death. Renfred offers to free Chise but she chooses to stay with Elias. Elias keeps the two sorcerers away while Chise performs the cleansing spell. Inside Matthew’s memories Chise sees him ask a sorcerer to cure Mina. The sorcerer teaches Matthew how to make a potion that steals cats’ nine lives to make Mina healthy. They force Mina to drink, but instead of curing her it dissolves her body, killing her. The sorcerer had used Mina to test his soul manipulation spell, which had failed. Matthew was then killed by the Cat King. Mina had wanted Chise to erase her and Matthew from existence, since the corruption prevented them from finding their way to the afterlife, condemning them to eternity in the darkness. The Cat King offers her ninth life to act as their guide. Chise instead uses the fairies' power over wind to carry Mina and Matthew to the afterlife where they happily reunite after so long apart. As she watches them, Chise can’t help but wonder how many years she has left.
6"The Faerie Queene."November 11, 2017 (2017-11-11)
With Matthew’s soul cleansed, Renfred and Alice leave and meet the sorcerer who killed Mina. Elias informs Chise she probably only has three years of life remaining, but he believes he has found a method of preventing her death. Chise promises to stay by his side before she passes out. Chise remains unconscious for 2 weeks, limiting her physical functions in favour of restoring her magic faster. During this time they are approached by Titania, Queen of the Faeries, and her husband, King Oberon, who restores Chise’s magic, waking her up. Chise then surprises the king by running straight to Elias instead of being frightened of him. The king inquires as to whether Chise and Elias have had children yet. Chise wonders about this while Elias experiences an unknown feeling in his gut, which amuses Titania. As they leave Oberon wonders whether Chise and Elias will stay together. Titania believes it would make more sense to guess exactly how many children they end up having. While returning home, Chise wishes she had met Elias years ago. Elias assures her that it does not matter, since he intends on curing her so they can spend decades together.
7"Talk of the devil, and he is sure to appear."November 18, 2017 (2017-11-18)
The sorcerer, Cartaphilius, threatens to use Alice in an experiment if Renfred ever fails him again. Elias is asked to discover if a Grimm in a nearby graveyard is dangerous. He gives Chise a magical ring to reduce the amount of magic she generates. At the graveyard, they find that a young woman has been murdered. Chise is attacked by a dark magical creature, but is saved by a young man who crushes the creature before collapsing from bite wounds. He suddenly transforms into the Grimm. Alice appears and tries to take the Grimm but Chise knocks her unconscious with a sleeping potion. The Grimm, called Yuris, is unable to remember who injured him. Alice reveals Cartaphilius wants to turn Yuris into a Chimera. Elias appears and decides Yuris is not dangerous. Alice asks Elias to help against Cartaphilius, who took Renfred's arm and created the Chimera that killed the young woman. Elias agrees since the Church was probably going to ask him to do it anyway. Chise suddenly pushes Alice out of the way and is impaled through the chest by Cartaphilius, who had been aiming for Alice. With Chise dying in his arms Elias transforms into his true form, an inhuman monster.
8"Let sleeping dogs lie."November 25, 2017 (2017-11-25)
Elias attacks Cartaphilius’s Praying Mantis Chimera. Chise experiences Yuris’s memories of Isabelle and suddenly awakens, quickly rushing to stop Elias, unafraid of his true form. Renfred appears and shoots Cartaphilius. Elias returns to normal, happy that Chise was not afraid of him. Cartaphilius returns to life and summons a Spider Chimera. Chise refuses to let him take Yuris and unleashes her magic, summoning Tarantula hawks to kill the spider. Elias stops her, as spells used to change the rules of nature are forbidden. They are suddenly teleported away by a Will-o'-the-wisp. The Will-o’-the-wisp, called Blue Flame, berates Yuris for clinging to his memories of Isabelle. Yuris finally accepts that Isabelle is dead and asks to become Chise’s familiar. Cartaphilius reappears but has his arm shot off by Alice. Chise makes Yuris her familiar and renames him Ruth. Empowered by Chise, Ruth destroys the Chimera. Cartaphilius decides to leave but reveals he has spent eternity experimenting to free himself of the pain his immortal body is cursed with. Renfred and Alice depart. Blue Flame retrieves the souls from the chimeras and guides them to the afterlife. Elias, Chise, and Ruth leave with Elias promising to save Chise’s scolding until they get home.
9"None so deaf as those who will not hear."December 2, 2017 (2017-12-02)
Since the incident with Cartaphilius, Elias has locked himself in his bedroom and refuses to see anybody. Silver, the fairy landlady, pushes Chise and Ruth out of the house with instructions to go shopping. On their way to town they meet Angelica who is concerned that Chise has become dependent on Elias. Chise realises Angelica is right. Chise enters Elias’s room, finding that he is stuck in his inhuman form. Chise decides to stay with him all night. The next morning Elias has disappeared so Chise and Ruth try to find him. While searching Chise meets a Leanan sídhe, a type of Fairy who lives off of a human's lifeforce, who is haunting an elderly man named Joel but refuses to steal his lifeforce. Chise believes the Leanan sídhe loves Joel but the Leanan sídhe insists such a thing is impossible before giving Chise a kiss and telling her to visit Joel again someday. Chise locates Elias in the forest restoring his body and becomes upset that he disappeared and still hides things from her. Elias promises he will tell her everything when he is ready. A fairy familiar appears with a message from Lindel asking Chise to return to the land of dragons for an important matter.
10"We live and learn."December 9, 2017 (2017-12-09)
Lindel, having heard of Chise's struggles to control her magic, decides it is time she makes her wand from Uncle Nevin's tree, though he insists she come alone. Chise worries about being separated from Elias, but she and Ruth travel to the land of dragons without him. After meeting Lindel, Chise sets about finding a suitable branch to become her wand. Back home Elias is noticeably upset at Chise’s absence, remarking that the house feels colder without her. Via a magical messenger bird Elias speaks with Adolf Stroud, an administrator from The College wanting to talk about Chise’s future. Lindel tells Chise how he first met Elias hundreds of years ago walking through a snowy forest alone. He took him to his master, Rahab, who is also unable to identify what he is. Elias himself cannot remember anything about where he came from except for the colour red. Rahab decides Lindel should take him as his apprentice and names him Elias Ainsworth. Renfred interrupts Elias’s conversation with Adolf and bluntly informs him that he will ruin her if he continues to do nothing more than simply let Chise live with him.
11"Lovers ever run before the clock."December 16, 2017 (2017-12-16)
Lindel tells Chise about the time he spent training Elias. He noticed that while Elias was a quick learner he had trouble understanding humans. On one occasion Elias almost killed several villagers who attacked Lindel. Elias tells Lindel that he thinks he ate humans once and still has urges to do so. Despite learning this Chise insists he has never frightened her, Lindel suggests that she tell Elias exactly how she feels. Chise is instructed to carve Uncle Nevin's branch into a wand. As night falls Lindel demonstrates his power and sings a beautiful song that causes flowers to bloom. Chise accidentally casts a mirror spell on the lake, through which she can see Elias. Elias tells her how he feels, that their home feels cold without her, despite it being summer. Chise says she is ready to tell him what she couldn’t before and promises to return home once her wand is finished. Overhearing them, Lindel complains he feels like a father having to raise two kids. Silver is shown burying the magical bird used to relay Renfred and Adolf’s voices to Elias, implying Elias killed the bird after they warned him about his future with Chise.
12"Better to ask the way than go astray."December 23, 2017 (2017-12-23)
With Chise still away Elias thinks about how close he has become to her. With Chise finished carving her wand Lindel sings a new spell, combining the wand with magical gems and Chise’s hair. As Chise holds her wand she has a vision of the spirit realm where she meets Uncle Nevin. She admits her feelings for Elias worry her as she had tried to stay distant in case he didn’t want her anymore. Uncle Nevin tells Chise he is grateful her mother chose not to kill her because then she never could have helped so many people. He also tells her to think about what she wants to do with her life. When Chise awakens she declares with a smile she has something to tell Elias and casts a powerful spell to fly back to Elias in the form of a giant fiery phoenix. As she arrives in Elias's arms he becomes happy: their home feels warm again. Before Chise can tell him what she wants to say she falls asleep from using too much magic. Chise dreams about a time when her parents were happy then awakens after two days asleep, happy for the first time in years.
13"East, west, home's best."January 6, 2018 (2018-01-06)
Chise and Elias are in the middle of shearing Wooly Bugs, magical creatures who eat cold from the air and grow wool with magical properties. Chise becomes distracted and is attacked by a subspecies of Wooly Bug that eats warmth and steals her body heat. Elias banishes it back to its home and rushes Chise indoors to warm up. Chise reveals she knows about Elias's impulse to eat humans, and the time he was tempted to eat her while in his inhuman form. Elias almost erases the memory but she refuses to let him as her memories of him are precious. Since she lost her parents and brother, Elias was the only family she had, so the thought of losing Elias scares her more than anything. Chise also reveals that both of her parents had the "sight" and could see the same creatures that most other humans cannot see. Elias admits he has no experience of emotions except for feeling cold when Chise was gone and warm when she returned. Chise recognises this as loneliness and promises to be teach him human things. While showing scenes of Chise studying her magic books, we see the books that Angelica sent her, including the story book that was the main item in the OVA episodes. Later, they are visited by a faerie acquaintance of Elias named Ashen Eye, who gives Chise a “gift” for capturing and binding his fellow spirits. He traps Chise in an animal skin, transforming her into a fox.
14"Looks breed love."January 13, 2018 (2018-01-13)
As a fox, Chise almost runs away to the forest until Elias asks her to stay as he hates the cold when she left. Chise changes back to human as she likewise hates the cold. Chise is asked by the Leanan sídhe to save Joel, who is dying, as she has been unintentionally draining his life. Elias tells Joel he probably only has a week to live. Joel accepts his fate as his life had been happy. His one wish is to speak with the red-eyed girl living in his garden. Chise decides to create a forbidden potion allowing Joel to see the Leanan sídhe. Elias almost refuses due to the magic required but instead warns Chise against exhausting herself. Five days later the Leanan sídhe uses the potion on Joel. Joel happily offers her his remaining life for unintentionally inspiring him to continue living after his wife died. As his life runs out Joel fades away, leaving her devastated. The Leanan sídhe decides to stay in Joel’s garden to avoid hurting any more people. King Oberon confiscates the rest of the forbidden potion. Chise’s ring suddenly shatters from the strain of limiting her magic and she begins vomiting blood.
15"There is no place like home."January 20, 2018 (2018-01-20)
Elias and Oberon take Chise to the Land of Fairies, where time passes much faster than normal, so she can recover under the care of the Fairy Doctor, Shannon. Titania tells Elias it would be safer for Chise to live in the Fairy Kingdom. Shannon tells Chise that living there would eventually turn her into something resembling a fairy. Elias, claiming he values Chise’s humanity, refuses Titania’s offer. Shannon lures Chise to a pool then, claiming she hates Sleigh Beggies, tries to drown her. Chise finds the strength to fight back and overpowers Shannon, only to find her injuries healed. Shannon apologises as she had used Chise’s sudden desire to live as a healing spell. Silver becomes increasingly agitated as time passes and Elias and Chise do not return. She recalls her previous life as a Banshee who lost the human family she was “haunting”. She was rescued by Spriggan, who tells her to always protect the weak. He then transforms her into a silkie and places her with the human family living in the house Elias will one day own. As Chise and Elias return they find months have passed and it is already winter. Silver rushes to hug Chise, happy they have come home.

They meet Hazel, a Centaur postman, who suggests they buy presents they could see Renfred and Elias using. They are accosted by Alice’s former drug dealer who wants her to begin buying drugs again, but they escape. Alice explains that as a child she was forced into using and selling drugs, until Renfred found her and took her in. Following an accident where a spirit scarred Renfred's face, Alice promised to always look after him. Ruth tells Chise he is happy she found a good friend. They locate Ashen Eye, who stole Ethan after Stella said she didn’t want him anymore. Stella realises she cannot remember Ethan’s name. Ashen Eye kidnaps Elias and Ethan, giving Chise until sunset to find them. Chise has an idea and runs to the house. While imprisoned elsewhere Elias realises Ethan has also begun to forget Stella. Chise locates Elias under a lake, having used the fox skin Ashen Eye gave her to transform into a bear and follow Elias's scent. Stella and Ethan reconcile, despite still not remembering each other. Ashen Eye admits defeat and returns their memories, but not before taking a crystal flower Chise gave to Stella. Despite their success, Chise becomes upset at having lost her own brother.

Ruth is helped by the fairy daughter of the Dark Lady who shows him which shadow Elias is hiding in. Chise realises Elias is jealous of Stella and having a tantrum. As his grip tightens she gets angry and threatens to stab herself, causing him to suddenly let go. Elias admits he became afraid Chise would leave. Chise and Elias later sleep in the same bed where she sings him a lullaby. Chise later visits Angelica, worried that Elias has not woken up for several days. Angelica suggests Chise may have accidentally sung a spell into the lullaby. Chise brews a remedy and, rather comically, forces Elias to swallow it, waking him up before she again passes out from magical exhaustion. Chise learns that as she had sold herself into slavery she is entitled to half the money Elias paid for her, 2.5 million pounds. Elias and Renfred argue fiercely about Chise’s future. Chise is contacted by a woman only she can hear and they make an unknown agreement. The traumatised dragon, as a result of Cartaphilius's procedure, transforms into a giant Chimera version of itself and begins burning the room. Chise, who can feel the dragon’s emotions, cries as she experiences the dragon’s fear, misery, and desperate desire to go home.

Lindel explains that Chise absorbed a dragon curse that will spread, cause constant pain, and eventually cause her body to simply fall apart. Shannon offers to have Chise live in the Fairy Kingdom with the hope that becoming a fairy might help her. Chise promises to consider the offer this time. Elias and Chise discuss how they will move forward with the time Chise has left. They are visited by Mariel, the witch Chise met at the auction. Mariel sees Chise’s arm and offers to help her find a cure, but only if Chise becomes a witch and joins her coven. Chise agrees to attend one of the coven's meetings before she decides. Elias visits the college for an unknown reason and immediately goes looking for Stella. Chise knows Elias is planning something. With Stella captured, Elias casts a spell on Chise that knocks her out. Elias realises Stella is possessed by Cartaphilius, who congratulates Elias for finally revealing himself as a monster. Cartaphilius, as Stella, begs Chise to save her. Elias admits that he chose Stella as a sacrifice because her closeness to Chise irritated him. Chise realises Elias was willing to murder a child because of simple jealousy and punches him in the face. Chise catches up to Stella and she realises it is Cartaphilius. He promises to prevent her death and release Stella in return for leaving with him to participate in his experiments. As Elias arrives, Chise states she cannot be with him "as he is now". Cartaphilius explains his plan: since he is cursed with eternal life and Chise is cursed to die, he proposes to swap Chise’s cursed arm for his own, hoping it will curse Cartaphilius to die while cursing Chise with immortality. He forcibly switches his and Chise’s left eyes to see if a transplant is possible. As he puts Chise to sleep, she dreams of her childhood. Her memories suggest only her father could fight dark creatures. A fragment of Cartaphilius enters her memories of the day her father and brother abandoned the latter, after which Chise and her mother were tormented by dark creatures. Chise’s traumatized mother committed suicide after a failed attempt to kill the latter. Chise confronts the dark version of her mother she kept in her memory and thanks her for not killing her, allowing her to move on. The Cartaphilius fragment reveals he is both the curse and the blessing that keeps Cartaphilius alive and is willing to give that blessing to Chise if she decides to live. Chise asks what he wants in return. The fragment says there is only one wish he has wanted for thousands of years. His wish is “Help me!” At that moment, Chise awakens back in the laboratory, overpowers the shocked Cartaphilius and declares she is going to forcibly find out why he keeps doing the awful things he does.

Chise enters Cartaphilius's memories and sees the original one taking over the body of a young gravedigger named Joseph, combining their memories and becoming confused over whether they are Cartaphilius or Joseph. Chise attacks but Cartaphilius is shielded by Ashen Eye, while Chise, in turn, is protected by Ruth, Elias, and Aerial the wind fairy. Ashen Eye tries to flee them, but he is defeated by Elias and Aerial. Chise tries to put Cartaphilius to sleep, but he stabs her, revealing sleeping spells do not work now he has her eye. Chise has Elias trap him while Ruth retrieves the eye. Chise hugs Cartaphilius, reassuring him that she understands him and they begin crying together. She sings a magic lullaby, putting them both to sleep. Chise dreams of the Cartaphilius fragment, who will now keep her alive by fighting the dragon's curse. She awakens in Elias's bed and reunites with him, then immediately berates him for all the things he has done, while Elias berates her for all of her decisions. They eventually make an agreement about their future decision-making. Life returns to normal, only Cartaphilius is now being kept by Chise in a place where he can finally sleep peacefully. Ashen Eye, who is secretly still alive, expresses his disappointment. Chise visits Angelica and Stella, who both give her birthday gifts. Silver tells Elias to go to the forest where he finds Chise wearing a wedding dress and veil. She places a ring on his left hand and they promise to always stay together, even if they occasionally disagree. As they return home, Chise decides to keep becoming an apprentice.
