Malik clan (Bihar)

The Mallick (Hasani Qadiriyya) , Malik baya, Urdu: ملک) [1] are small Sayyid Muslim community found in the state of Bihar in India and follow Sunni Islam. .[2] According to Bihar Minority commission report and several other historical books they are considered to be an ashraf community [3] among Bihari Muslims meaning that they have high social status. They are mainly concentrated around Nalanda and Bihar Sharif.[4] They are very few in numbers and majority of them reside in South Bihar , Pakistan and Europe and United States.

History

They are the descendants of Syed Ibrahim Mallick baya and family according to the government data of bihar Sharif and ancient books , a Sufi born near Ghazni (Afghanistan), descended from ancestors who had migrated there from Baghdad .The Muslim population of Bihar was around 13% before the partition of India in 1947. At that time "Syed Mallick Baya Families" constituted about 15% of the Muslim population of Bihar.

Hazart Syed Ibrahim Mallick Baya Tomb is historical place, being conserved by Archaeological Survey of India[5]

Syed Ibrahim Mallick (or Syed Ibrahim Mallick Baya, Mallick Bayyu) was born near Ghazni, in Afghanistan. His ancestors had migrated to the region from Baghdad to escape from persecution at the hands of the Abbasids. Syed Ibrahim Mallick came to India in 740 Hijri (1339 AD), where he served as a general in Sultan Mohammad Tughlaq's army. After several successful battles and campaigns he received the title of "Mallicks Baya" from the Sultan Tughlaq, and was later appointed the Governor of the district of Bihar by the Sultan's son.[6]

NOTE

There are other Malik communities in Gujarat ,Uttar Pradesh , Bihar and Bengal. They are have no relation with Syed Mallick Baya families of Bihar .

There are Malik who converted from Hindu Maliks , Bengali Maliks . Various Muslim groups also use "Malik" as surname or title in bihar and all over India.
