Mangalamkunnu Ganapathy

Mangalamkunnu Ganapathy (c. 1947–25 May 2019) was an elephant owned by the Mangalamkunnu family (tharavadu), that owns the largest number of captive elephants in Kerala, only behind Guruvayur devaswom.[1] Ganapathy was famous for acting in many Malayalam, Tamil movies and TV commercials.[2] The elephant has acted in movies like Anachandam, Valsalyam Naatammai. He also won prizes in Gaja beauty pageants and was awarded the titles of Gajakesari, Gajarathanam and Gajarajan.[3]

Along with Mangalamkunnu Ganapathy, Mangalamkkunnu Karnan (late) and Mangalamkunnu Ayappan are the two other most famous elephants in the tharavadu. It was in 1990 that Ganapathy came into the Mangalamkkunnu family. He has a history of miraculously surviving the disease of Sara, which affects elephants.[4] He has participated in many poorams including the famous Thrissur pooram. Due to age related problems, Mangalamkkunnu Ganapathy died on 25 May 2019.[5]
