Manjamma Jogati

B. Manjamma Jogati is as Indian transgender Folk Artiste. She has been working to patronise Jogati Nritya (a ritual folk dance performed by a group of women, generally tradeswomen) and Janapada songs, practised in rural Karnataka, Maharashtra, and parts of Andhra Pradesh.[1] In 2019 She became the first transgender chairperson of Janapada Loka (Karnataka Janapada Academy).[2]

Personal life

She was born in Bellary district of Karnataka to her parents as Manjunath Shetty. However, by the age of 15, she identified herself as a woman and renamed her self as Manjamma Jogati. She was disowned by her family by making her part of a transgender community in rural Deccan that reveres the fiery Goddess Renuka Yellamma.[3]

She has faced several hardship in her life like poverty, social exclusion, and even rape.[1][4]

Work

She mastered several art forms like the Jogati Nritya and Janapada songs, Kannada language sonnets in praise of various female deities.

She gained expertise at these art forms and gained popularity among several people as she adorned hundreds of stages, both within and outside Karnataka. She helped many of there dying art forms gain the limelight.
