Mankessim

Mankessim is a town in the Central Region[1][2] of Ghana, West Africa. It is approximately 75 km west of Accra, on the main road to Sekondi-Takoradi. It is the traditional headquarters of the Fante ethnic group of Ghana. Mankessim's history is linked to three famed warriors (Obrumankoma, Odapagyan and Oson) who helped the people's migration from Techiman in the current Brong Ahafo Region to Adoagyir in the Central region.The town is located at an elevation of 75 meters above sea level and its population amounts to 26,909.[3]

Mankessim is the traditional paramount for all the Fantse-speaking people and is linked to the Nananom Pow (sacred grove) near Obidan. It has a large market that attracts traders from Ghana and beyond. Just as in other prominent Fante towns, Mankessim has Asafo Companies, traditional military groups which no longer fight wars but are given acknowledgement for their role in the history and development of the town.

Notable people

  • Lydia Forson, actress was born here in 1984.[4] Dr. Augustus Eduafo (Fanta), a well known surgeon and medical professor residing and working in Ohio, USA is a native of the town. Lawyer Kweku Paintsil of Paintsil and Paintsil Esq, a legal firm is also a citizen, Joseph Dolling Kobina Mensah, a general contractor who also helped with the rebuilding of the main market. The famous fantse historian, Mr. Crayner is also from this town. Famous Ghanaian Musicians such as Kwaa Mensah, Kofi Bentil,FiiFi XLNC (Th4 Kwages) Kwame Wadaada, Nero X, Dvice have their roots in this community. Notable educationist Mr Isaac Kwegyir Essel popularly called Teacher Essel Proprietor of Sabs Smerbu Memorial JHS, Former CSOP Mr Prince Nana Osreko Yamoah Ponko I Essel(Akwamuhene of Mankessim Traditional Area), Isaac Kwegyir Essel(Paakwesi, Favoured Isaac )- Scotland trained oil and gas expert, Mrs Agnes Ama Bentsiwaa Botchway, Prof Samuel Ebow Quainoo, Mr Fred Oware, Mireku Duker
  • Augustine Arhinful, footballer was born there in 1994.

Further developments

Mankessim has a number of clinics and the fourth branch of the Sanford World Clinic in Ghana was inaugurated in the Mfantseman Municipality in 2013 [5] There is also Mercy Women's hospital[6] located near the Manna heights Hotel.
