Marcelo González Godoy

Son of the taxist and communal dirigent, Mario González,[1] and the headmistress Gladys Godoy,[1] Marcelo was linked to football since his childhood, which was very influenced by his grandfather Juan Guillermo Godoy,[1] amateur footballer who played in the first squads of Coquimbo regional team.[1] He began his studies at Escuela N°5 for then attending Líceo A8 (or «A8 Lyceum»).[1]

Ending the high School, his principal goal was study theater, but his own and family's economical complications prevent him to take these option. Regarding this, he said: «When I finished my secondary education, in those years I performed the PAA —Prueba de Aptitud Académica— and I qualified to study theater in Santiago, but due to financial problems I couldn't study».[1] However, even so he worked to finance him an english course to have a support towards his own projects[1] which began to relacionate with communications world. Thus, he used to presentate projects to different media stations until that he was accepted by Canal 8 UCV TV in 1981,[1] starting thereby his career aged 18.

Once in UCV TV, he worked at local station of La Serena (next to his native Coquimbo). There, he presented a project to realize a program about Fiestas Patrias (or «Homeland Holidays»), which was well received by channel's board.

At the same time, González developed a career in radio, where he consolidated his voice at a regional level for almost five years, reaching to have important radio programs in media like Radio Agricultura or Radio Amistad.[1] Already consolidating in the local world, in 1991, González decides to take new opportunities in Santiago, Capital city of Chile, where they already knew his great voice.[1] At Kreutzberger's radio, he broadcast the program «Los Gigantes del Deporte» (Sports Giants)[1] alongside personalities like Wladimiro Mimica, Eduardo Bonvallet, Carlos Caszely or Héctor Vega Onesime. This platform allowed him being discovered by football commentator, Milton Millas, with whom he became close friends during their work at Radio Nacional, about which González thinks:

After working with Wladimiro, it appeared Milton Millas, with whom I had already shared some interviews in Coquimbo Region and invited me to work with him in then program Más Deporte («More Sports»), which had one of the greatest tunes in the country (...) and where I worked with Elías Figueroa, Sergio Livingstone and Alberto Fouillioux. In that time, Milton began to lead Megavisión sports area and called me to being part of it as a sports reporter to continue, at the same time, consolidating myself in radio to be the voice of main newscasts.[1]

In 1998, he left Megavisión and joined Canal 13.[1] The same year, and with the sufficient budget through his works in different media, he entered to study journalism in University of Santiago de Chile, where he finished his grade in 2003.

In 2008, he was released from CDF.

In 2018, it was reported that WarnerMedia hired him to broadcast the 2018 Copa América Femenina as play-by-play commentator[2] alongside color commentators Fernando Tapia, Javiera Naranjo and Magdalena Grant.[3]

In 2020, González related the 2020 Women's Primera División de Chile Final between Santiago Morning and Universidad de Chile –won by Morning– that was broadcast by Televisión Nacional de Chile.[4] There, he was accompanied by color commentators Gustavo Huerta and Yoselin Fernández.[4]

He thinks that the rivalry between hooligans of Deportes La Serena and Coquimbo Unido it isn't possitive for the region.[5]
