Mark Liu

Liu was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He attended Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School[7] before receiving his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University[9] and then his M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science[10] at the University of California, Berkeley.[8]

Liu started his career at Intel and AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States.[11] From 1983 to 1987 he was with Intel Corporation, developing silicon process technologies for Intel microprocessors.[9] From 1987 to 1993, he was a research manager for the High Speed Electronics Research Laboratory with AT&T Bell Laboratory.[12] Liu began working at TSMC in 1993.[13][14] He served as the president of Worldwide Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. in 2000 when TSMC acquired them.[15] He became chief operating officer of TSMC in 2012 and then assumed the role as co-CEO in 2013 with C.C. Wei.[8][16] Liu established TSMC's first 12-inch fab and its GIGAFAB operations.[17][18]

Under Liu's leadership, TSMC was awarded the position as a 2018 Thomson Reuters Top 100 Global Technology Leader.[19]

Liu is chairman of the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (TSIA), serves on the Presidential CEO Advisory Board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and serves on the Engineering Advisory Board at the UC Berkeley College of Engineering.[20]

In 2020, Liu was named an Industrial Technology Research Institute laureate.[21]

In July of 2020, Liu hired Hugo Barbosa Vazquez from Philips to work with him on market analysis and forecasting activities across all geographies.
