Career

Weidemaier served as an assistant coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes baseball team while he attended Ohio State University, getting a master's degree. He was a minor league coach in the Kansas City Royals chain in 1982. From 1984-1987, he worked with the California Angels as a scout and minor league coach. He piloted the Algodoneros de Torreon for part of 1988 (replacing Alfredo Rios) and the 1989 Prince William Cannons (18-23, before being replaced by Stump Merrill).[1] Weidemeier was in player development for the New York Yankees in 1989-1990.

From 1991-1995, he was a Cleveland Indians scout in the eastern United States and Latin America. From 1996-1998, he was an advance scout for the Chicago White Sox. He was advance scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1999-2006, was special assignment scout from 2007-2008, then was advance scout again as well as special assistant to the general manager in 2009-2010.[2][3]

Weidemaier worked as an advance scout with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2011 through 2013. After the 2013 season, Diamondbacks coach Matt Williams was named manager of the Washington Nationals, Weidemaier joined the Nationals on Williams' staff as the team's defensive positioning coach.[4][5] Following the 2015 season, the Nationals fired Williams and the entire coaching staff.[6]

Mark accepted a position with the Rojos del Águila de Veracruz (Veracruz Red Eagles) in the AAA Mexican league during the 2015-2016 season. As field manager, he led the team through the season coaching, recruiting and signing players. With the end of the Mexican winter league, Mark coached first in the MLB Coaching Development Program in the Dominican Republic and The Bahamas during the Spring of 2016, and then for Team USA Baseball in the early Summer of '16. Beginning mid-2016, Mark was brought on board with the Samsung Lions in the Korean major leagues and performed in a dual scouting coordinator / coaching position for the balance of the '16 season and the entire 2017 season.

In April of 2018, Mark resigned from the Samsung team upon being hired by the Cincinnati Reds into an advance scouting role, under manager Jim Riggleman. Though the Reds started strong, they ultimately went 67-95 for the season and Riggleman and his staff were subsequently let go by the Red's front office. Mark then briefly managed the Westside (Detroit) Wooly Mammoths in the United Shore Professional Baseball League in 2019 before returning to S. Korea with the Kia Tigers in late 2019. Today, Weidemaier is bench coach for the team working again for Matt Williams who is team manager. As of April 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic begins to ebb in Asia, the Korea Baseball Organization (South Korean major leagues) is the only baseball league in the world playing actual games which are broadcast in both S. Korea and the United States on ESPN2.[7]
