The pool, known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Pool, was added in 1973.[2] The pool had initially been planned for a nearby park at Hampstead Square, but the ground was deemed unsuitable.[3] The Olympic sized pool opened to the public in June 1974[4] and is the only public 50-meter pool in the region.[5] It is one of two public pools in the city of Charleston that are open all year.[6]
