Mate Peteh

Mate Peteh (1873-1945), was a peasant from Žminj, and a prominent "populist" (Istrian right-winger).

As an opponent of fascism and Italian rule in Istria, Peteh cooperated to some extent with the Communist-led People's Liberation Movement, in terms of the annexation of Istria, but due to his worldview and religious beliefs he could not fully join the partisan movement. He refused to transmit partisan messages, fearing that the partisans themselves would betray him to the Germans. He was eventually killed by the partisans on April 19, 1945.[1][2][3]
