Matt Gunther


Matt Gunther is a New York-based advertising, editorial, and documentary photographer and director. He is best known the book 'Probable Cause'.

Career

Gunther studied at LaGuardia High School in New York City and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York at Purchase.[1]

Gunther is best known for his book Probable Cause.[2]

Gunther was embedded with the Newark Police force for nearly a decade between 2002 and 2011.[3] Shot on a 10x8 camera the photos use a fair and democratic hand, with both civilians and police treated with sympathy and respect.[4]

Gunther was able to obtain access to the Newark Police force through his families connections to the department.[5] Once access was approved he was able to spend time in precincts and go on drive alongs with officers.[6]

The book was co-published by Schilt and Magical Thinking, a not-for-profit publishing and educational initiative founded by Joshua Lutz and Tara Cronin.[7]

He has shot numerous celebrities including Angelina Jolie.[8]
