Mehbooba (2008 film)

Mehbooba ("Beloved") is a Bollywood romance film written, produced and directed by Afzal Khan. The story is based on a love-triangle, with the lead protagonists being Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn and Manisha Koirala. The music of the film was composed by Ismail Darbar. Mehbooba was released in India on 11 July 2008; it was shot in 2000, but got delayed and released in 2008.

Synopsis

The story follows a rich businessman called Shravan (Sanjay Dutt) who plays with fire, women, himself, and anything he can get his hands on.

Shravan has everything one can dream of having and what he does not have, he buys it.

One day, he meets the beautiful and vivacious Varsha (Manisha Koirala), whom he tries to woo, become friends with her and after a while, proposes marriage to her, to which she eventually agrees. The couple get engaged, and go on a small holiday. However, Varsha’s beautiful dream comes to a shocking end when Shravan tells her that his love for her was just a drama to get engaged so he could sleep with her.

Heart broken and shattered, Varsha’s whole world collapses around her. She leaves the country and goes as far away as possible from Shravan ,and begins to start a new life with a new name of Payal. Shravan returns to his home, and says things did not go well with Varsha.

After the incident, years pass by into a decade and then Payal meets a man named Karan (Ajay Devgn) a young artist, who begins to follow her, and explains she is the woman he sees in his dreams, they fall in love. Payal agrees and they begin wedding preparations.

Everything is going well, and the whole village is invited to the wedding. Little does Payal know that "Shravan" is the brother of Karan. During the ceremonies week, prior to the wedding, Payal's world turns upside down as she sees Shravan and Shravan notices her.

Word gets around and spreads like wildfire and then Karan, who then finds out the truth that was hidden from him by Payal, becomes dismayed and attempts suicide. At this point, Shravan comes to Karan and explains him that it was all his fault, as he had played with Payal/Varsha's life a long time ago.

Shravan is hurt and struggles to make Karan promise to take care of Varsha/Payal, and also not to tell the family that Payal is Varsha. He tries to ask for forgiveness yet dies in Karan's arms.

Box office

Mehbooba had a good first-week response at the box office. It collected Rs. 35.45 crore in its first week. The films did business of 68 crores in India and 90.32 crores worldwide. The film is considered a failure, and was demoted as a disaster at the box office by Box Office India.[1]

Music

The soundtrack was composed by Ismail Darbar with lyrics by Anand Bakshi.[2]
