Mense
A mense (from the Latin "mensa") (English: meal, table) is the name of the ecclesiastical income in the Catholic Church.
Background
The mense is usually a land tax whose income is used for the maintenance of its holder (i.e. bishop, abbot, canons, pastor, etc.). In the abbeys in commende, the abbey mense is divided into three lots, one for the commendatory abbot, one for the religious community and another devoted to the payment of charges.[1]
- to the bishop or to the abbot (Mense épiscopale);
- to canons or monks (Mense capitulaire);
- to the parish priest or minister (Mense curiale).
