Mikis Mantakas

Mikis Mandakas (Greek: Μίκης Μάντακας; June 13, 1952 – February 28, 1975) was a Greek fascist student who was murdered by communists in Italy during riots.

Biography

Mikis Mandakas was born in Athens. He was the son of army officer Nikos Mandakas and Calliope. During the dictatorship he was studying in Italy, first in Bologna and later in Rome, for dissertation on medicine studies. There he joined the youth of Italian neo-fascist party, MSI, FUAN.

The Murder

On February 24, 1975 in city of Rome, the trial of three leftists accused for burning the house of Mario Mattei, the secretary of the local organization of the neo-fascist party MSI, began. On 16 April 1973, his home was set ablaze and his two children, Stefano and Virgilio (8 and 22 years respectively), were burnt alive after the arson attack. Police surrounded the courthouse because of the high number of leftist demonstrators. The protests become violent, with individuals throwing bricks, stones and Molotov cocktails. The fights continued over the next two days. On the fourth day of the trial carried out a protest rally where the MSI condemned the inaction of the government towards the incidents. From early morning start conflicts between neo-fascists and communists. Ιn the historic center of the city, conducted the trial Achille Lollo. During the fall and engaging shots. Outside the court a citizen injured in the leg by a bullet and a reporter from brick. In the room that day are Michael and other members of the MSI. When noon the court interrupts the meeting, the fascists organized to go. At 13:15 a large group gathered outside the offices of MSI. They are trying to storm the building and the corridor behind the main entrance wrapped in flames from molotov cocktails. The few in the building decide to leave by the side door but perceived as fleeing and accept blistering shots from the left. A bullet pierces the skull and Michael wedged inside the right temple. Loses consciousness, but is still alive. Partners carried him back into the office and expect for aid. Later he would let his last breath in the hospital operating room Spiritus Santos. During the intense fighting injured 22 other people, both of them beaten by bullets.[1] Blood transfusions are ongoing, while the neurosurgeon makes admission to surgery. The statements of the doctor was: "The missile entered the left area of the parietal bone and crossed the entire skull, making the brain to explode." The surgery lasts two hours and at 18:30 the heart of Mikis Mandakas stops beating.

Reactions

The killer was Alvaro Lojacono, member of the Italian Communists and later the Red Brigades. For this crime sentenced in 1981 to 16 years, but never spent a day in prison for it.[2] In Italy, on the occasion of the assassination Mandakas, political unrest followed resulting in the creation of an armed branch Nuclei Armati Rivoluzionari (NAR) of former members of the MSI. Their hatred toward leftists led to hundreds, armed now, attacks from the NAR, which arrived on 28 February 1978 to assassinate a man and attack three of his comrades. Notices sent indicated that the attack was in memory of Mikis Mandakas completing three years of his murder.
