Mirza Huseyn Afandi Qayibov

Mirza Huseyn Afandi Qayibov (Azerbaijani: Mirzə Hüseyn Əfəndi Qayıbov) - Azerbaijani clergyman, literary critic, publicist, enlightener and Mufti of the Caucasus(1884-1917).[1] He was the author of 4-volme work on Azerbaijani literature.

Life

Mirza Huseyn was born in 1830. He was from Ashaga-Salakhly villegae of Qazakh District of Azerbaijan. He was studied in the religious school which called madrasa by local people. He studied Arabic and Persian perfectly. With the help of the Mufti of Caucasus Mahammad Afandi, Miza Huseyn entered Tbilisi Muslim Office as a secretar. Then he was appointed to Muslim school as a sharia teacher.

He worked at the Transcaucasian Teachers Seminary and awarded scholarships to 43 Azerbaijanis.[2]

He was be friend with Akhundzadeh and Chavchavadze who were the prominent intellectuals of Caucasus in XIX century. In 1881 he was appointed Mufti of Caucasus in 1884 and he had worked this position till his die. 4-volme work on Azerbaijani literature what was written by Mirza Huseyn is the valuable book. This book contains examples from the works of Azerbaijani poets who lived in the XVIII-XIX centuries. In 1906 he finished his book “Zübtədül-Əhkamuş-şəriyyə” and then wrote “Nümuneyi-ləhceyi- Azərbaycan”, “Müqəddəs tarix və sərfnəhv”, “Məbadeyi-təlimi-sibyan”, “Məsaili-aləmi-hesab”.[3]

He helped Bergenin to collect Azerbaijani poets’ poems and A.P.Bergenin wrote scientific work (German: Die Sanqer des XVIII und XIX Jahrhunderts in adserbeidshanischer).[4]

He died March 1917.

Family

Mirza Huseyn was father of Nigar Shikhlinskaya who was the first Azerbaijani nurse. Nigar Shikhlinskaya had served on the Western Front of World War I where she opened the Red Cross hospital.[5] Mirza Huseyn was the father-in-law of general Ali-Agha Shikhlinski. Ali-Agha Shikhlinski was the famous Azerbaijani artillery general and he had served in the Imperial Army of Russia.[6]

The other daughter Govhar khanum Gayibova married with Ibrahim aga Usubov. Mirza Huseyn had three sons - Bahadır Qayıbov, Nadir bəy Qayıbov and Cahangir Qayıbov.

The first Azerbaijani pilot Farrukh Gayibov was relative of Mirza Huseyn Afandi Qayıbov.
