Mount Vernon City Council

The Mount Vernon City Council is the legislative branch of government for the City of Mount Vernon. The form of government consists of a Mayor-Council government. The city elects five members to the council, each serving four year terms and serve at-large.[2] There are no term limits for city council members. The city council president, pro tempore, and acting pro tempore are elected by members. The council president is a member of all committees with the chair and co-chair. In the past, leadership positions were elected upon rotation however recently it has been given to more experienced council members.[3][4] Regular meetings are held the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, with special meetings held if needed. The city is the third largest in Westchester County, New York and eighth largest in the state.[5]

Members earn $33,000 a year and the city council president earns $36,500 a year. Members receive no additional compensation for serving as a committee chair or officer.
