Murders of Joel and Lisa Guy

On Saturday, November 26, 2016, in Knoxville, Tennessee, the weekend after Thanksgiving, 28-year old Joel Michael Guy Jr. murdered and dismembered his parents, 61-year old Joel Guy Sr. and 55-year old Lisa Guy.[1][2] He stabbed his father Joel at least 42 times and his mother Lisa at least 31 times. He was convicted of both murders in October 2020 and received life in prison.[3] Both parents were soon to retire and to stop providing money to their son, and he was to get a $500,000 life insurance policy if both parents were dead or missing.[4]

The murder involved an elaborate plot to stab both parents, dismember and dissolve the remains, clean and burn the house, as well as frame the father for the crime.[5] Guy was injured during the stabbing, and left the partially dissolved remains in the house as he left to dress his wounds. Before he returned, police discovered the scene upon performing a welfare check, when Guy's mother failed to show up for work on Monday the 28th.[6] They discovered a bloody scene and a notebook detailing the plot in a backpack, along with both parents' torsos and dismembered limbs dissolving in plastic bins, in an acid-based solution full of corrosive chemicals described by prosecutors as a "diabolical stew of human remains",[2] as well as the father's severed hands on the floor, and the mother's head in a pot on the stove.[7]

Joel Michael Guy Sr. (February 10, 1955 November 26, 2016) was a pipeline engineering designer. Lisa Guy (née Madere) (August 8, 1961 November 26, 2016) was a human resources accounts payable administrator at Jacobs Engineering in Oak Ridge.[1]

Their son Joel Michael Guy Jr. (born 1988) graduated from the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts in Natchitoches in 2006, and previously attended Hahnville High School.[8][9] He had never worked and had always been supported by his family. He spent one semester at George Washington University,[10] then attended Louisiana State University as a student and lived in Baton Rouge right up until the time of the murders in 2016, ostensibly training to become a plastic surgeon.[11][12] Guy Sr. also had three daughters by a first marriage.

The Guys had recently sold their Knoxville house at 11434 Goldenview Lane and were to be retiring to Surgoinsville. Joel Jr. and his three half sisters attended what was to be the last event at the Knoxville house, Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 24, 2016.[13]

Planning

Book of Premeditation

The prosecution at his trial dubbed the handwritten journal found in Guy's backpack the "book of premeditation", as it contained detailed notes outlining his intent to murder and destroy the remains of his parents.[14]

One page includes the following:[15]

                                                                   *get carving knives

just get rid of bloody spots to prevent

Surveillance footage

Guy was caught on several surveillance cameras buying the supplies he would later use to murder and try to dissolve his parents.[16] He used cash for every transaction, and self checkout most of the time. He bought supplies for the murder as early as November 7, buying several items at an Ace Hardware in Napoleonville including muriatic acid and food-grade hydrogen peroxide. On the 18th at Home Depot he can be seen buying the bleach sprayer, extension cords, and a timer.[3] At Academy Sports on November 19, he is seen buying a Marine-style Ka-Bar knife. On November 21, he can be seen at a Knoxville Walmart buying a plastic blue tote large enough for the dismembered bodies to dissolve in.[17]

Lisa Guy was also caught on surveillance footage shortly before her murder, buying supplies at Walmart at approximately 12:15 p.m.[18]

Murders

Murder of Joel Guy Sr.

On November 26, Guy attacked his father with a knife in a second floor exercise room while his mother was out shopping for groceries at Wal-Mart. The scene showed evidence of a struggle, with torn blinds, blood on the wall and corner, and an overturned Bowflex machine.[18] Guy Sr.'s clothes were cut from his dead body and left near where he was killed. Two large knives lay nearby, and his bloodied pack of cigarettes lay on top of the clothes pile.

Murder of Lisa Guy

Lisa Guy came home through the front door, dropped the groceries on the floor of the foyer,[19] and proceeded up the stairs, and when she got to the top was attacked with a knife.[18] Nine of her ribs were severed.[20] Her clothes were then cut from her body and left near where she was killed, and by several tubs of sewer line cleaner.

Dismemberment

Guy Sr.'s hands were removed at the wrists and left nearby on the floor of the exercise room. Mrs. Guy's head was removed, carried down the stairs, put in a pot on the stove and heated. At trial the forensic examiner testified her head was not just cut but broken off with force. Both victims also had their arms and legs disarticulated - Guy Sr. at the waist, and Mrs. Guy at the knees. Their limbs and torso were then placed each in a bin full of chemicals to dissolve their bodies. Each body had a large gash inflicted after death so that the chemicals would quicker seep into the body's main cavity.[20]

Cuts to perpetrator

Guy Jr. sustained several cuts to his hands in the assault on his father, including a deep cut to his left thumb. At approximately 3:30 p. m. Guy Jr. is seen in Wal-Mart's first aid section, getting bandages and ointment for the wounds he received to his hands. He also purchased isopropyl alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.[13]

On Sunday, Guy drove back to Baton Rouge to have his wounds treated at the student clinic.[21]

Investigation

Mrs. Guy's boss, Jennifer Whited, was suspicious of her absence at work and called for police to do a welfare check.[2]

Welfare check

Knox County officers Steven Ballard and Jeremy McCord and others first found a seemingly empty house at 11434 Goldenview Lane. The house was for sale, yet there was no real-estate lock on the front door. They soon discovered the back door's doorknob had been removed and put on the front door. They could see groceries on the floor including perishable items, such as bacon, sausage and ice cream, through the front door.[22] Through the remaining hole in the back door, they could sense heat and a strange smell emanating from the house, and from another angle they could see the groceries. One of the officers entered one of the homeowner's cars and pressed a garage door opener, which allowed the police to access the house.[22]

They first discovered a table with the Guy's wallets and a sledgehammer on top, and then another with long guns. A pot was also boiling on the stove downstairs, and the stove was left on. At the bottom of the stairs were the grocery items seen earlier. They then ascended the stairs, hearing an intermittently barking dog. They then could see Joel Guy Sr.'s dismembered hands on the floor by looking down a hallway, and discovered the dismembered corpses in solution in a bathroom.[22]

Among other items investigators found upstairs were sewer line cleaner, a bag of baking soda, Liquid Fire, muriatic acid, drain opener, lye, food-grade hydrogen peroxide, bleach and a bleach sprayer.[23] Investigators also discovered a note in an open suitcase that depicted the name and Louisiana address of an Ace Hardware Store, along with a notation about sewer line cleaner.[23]

The toxic fluid required bio-hazard equipment for removal by the KCSO Hazmat Team, and due to the volume of evidence in such a disturbing scene, KCSO’s Forensics Unit worked throughout the night Monday and into the following day processing the crime scene.[13]

Apprehension of suspect

The FBI, the Knox County Sheriff's Office and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office placed Guy Jr. under surveillance for a few days and apprehended him on Tuesday the 29th, in the parking lot of his Baton Rouge apartment complex on Nicholson Drive, when he tried to get into his 2006 Hyundai Sonata.[24]

When Guy's car was opened in Louisiana, he had a meat grinder in the trunk.[25] The search of Guy's apartment in Louisiana provided additional receipts, but was later ruled unconstitutional by Judge Steve Sword.

Trial

Guy pled not guilty, yet filed a motion that he be given the death penalty if convicted.[26][27] Guy's defense counsel John Halstead and Jonathan Harwell presented no evidence on his behalf. The prosecution was led by Leslie Nassios and Hector Sanchez.[28]

The trial took four days. Guy was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.[29] He was also convicted of abuse of a corpse.[30]
