NBA Fastbreak '98

NBA Fastbreak '98 is a basketball simulator released for the Sony PlayStation in 1997. It takes place during the 1997-98 National Basketball Association season. It was published by Midway Games and GT Interactive. Originally announced under the title "Hardwood Heroes",[4][5][6] the game was released with minimal changes as NBA Action 98 on Sega Saturn and Microsoft Windows, published by Sega.[7] Another version was being developed by Z-Axis for the Nintendo 64 under the title "NBA Fast Break 64", with a prospective November 1997 release,[8] but it was cancelled.

Reception

The Sega Saturn version of NBA Action 98 received favorable reviews, while the PC version and NBA Fastbreak '98 received mixed reviews, according to the review aggregation website GameRankings.[9][10][11]

Jay Boor of IGN praised NBA Fastbreak '98's change from games using two dimensional sprites to 3D, as well as the actual NBA content (logos, players, uniforms, etc.) instead of being another generic basketball game. He did, however, criticize the gameplay as being "sluggish", citing that the "defense is always slower than the offense", making blocking difficult. Boor also criticized the crowd effect, comparing it to a "fizzled three-inch speaker"; and commented that the referee whistle "sounds like a cricket" and remarked upon the poor quality of the rim sounds. He remarked this as being disappointing "considering Midway's reputation for good sound effects".[25] Ryan MacDonald of GameSpot called Fastbreak '98 a "good first attempt", and commented that the game is decent, but not the best.[23]
