Nicholas Weise

Nicholas J. Weise is a British chemist and a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Manchester.[1] His research in general is based on organic chemistry and molecular biology, specifically on enzymology, biocatalysis and industrial biotechnology.[7] He also engages in chemistry based public engagement projects within the University of Manchester.[8]

Education

Weise completed his Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology in 2012 at University of Manchester.[1] He then continued to read for his Doctor of Philosophy degree on Discovery and Development of Class I Lyase-like Enzymes for Biotechnological Applications and successfully completed it in 2016.[9] His PhD was supervised by Prof. Nicholas Turner and Prof. Sabine Flitsch.[9]

Research and career

Upon graduation, Weise worked as a Postdoctoral researcher from 2015 - 2017 at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology and during this time, he also worked as a Visiting Fellow from 2016 - 2017 at Open University.[1] He was later promoted to the position of Lecturer at University of Manchester and was also awarded a Senior Fellowship in the Higher Education Academy and is the current Chemistry PASS managing staff at University of Manchester.[1][10][11]

Notable work

Weise's work in general is based on industrial biotechnology including the enzyme Phenylalanine Ammonia Lyases (PALs). In 2018, Weise participated in a research along with Prof.Nicholas Turner and Prof. Nigel Scrutton in which via the combination of three biocatalyst classes (phenylalanine ammonia lyase, carboxylic acid reductase and alcohol dehydrogenase), cinnamyl alcohol could be obtained from the primary metabolite and the fermentation product L-phenylalanine.[12] This was the first reported process in which cinnamyl alcohol could be produced without being dependent on petrochemical starting materials.[12]

Weise has also participated in several outreach and Public Engagement activities and is the current Head of Social Responsibility and the Teaching & Learning Enhancement Lead in the Department of Chemistry at University of Manchester.[13][14][15] Working with Multilingual Manchester, Weise carried out and developed the first Multilingual Science Workshops in Manchester, where the promotion of science with language diversity was achieved.[16] The activities were carried out at Al-Manar Arabic School, Burnage and Hellenic School of Manchester, Salford.[16]
