Co-written by Farley and Claude Brie, North of Albany stars Céline Bonnier, Zeneb Blanchet, and Eliott Plamondon as a Canadian family who run away to the United States. After their car breaks down and they become stranded in the Adirondacks, the family recruits the help of a local mechanic named Paul (portrayed by Rick Roberts) to get back on the road.

Originally going to start filming in Canada in July 2020, North of Albany instead began principal photography in the United States in October, due to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming took place in locations around Montreal and concluded in November 2020. Financed by Telefilm Canada and SODEC, North of Albany is set to be distributed by Maison 4:3 in 2021.

Premise

North of Albany features a single mother (Céline Bonnier) who decides to flee Montreal with her two children, including her young teenager (Zeneb Blanchet) who has just physically attacked a girl who was harassing her.[5] The family flees but gets stranded in the Adirondacks, where they bond with a local mechanic (Rick Roberts) who helps them confront the real reasons they’re on the run.[6]

Development

North of Albany was announced on June 17, 2019, when Telefilm Canada revealed three films that they would fund in the upcoming months.[3][12] On December 16, 2019, the production company SODEC announced that they would also finance the film.[13] In multiple interviews, director and co-writer Marianne Farley revealed that she got the idea for North of Albany after her car broke down "very close to the Adirondack Park" while she was visiting her brother in the United States.[8][14] Calling the mishap a "shitty adventure", Farley wrote the initial screenplay for the film alongside Claude Brie, her spouse at the time.[5][15] Farley also produced the film alongside Benoit Beaulie, under their own production banner, Slykid & Skykid, in the company's second project following 2020's Our Own (Les Nôtres).[6]

Filming

North of Albany was set to begin filming in July 2020, but was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[16][17] Originally planned to be filmed in the Adirondacks, where most of the film takes place, the film finally began filming in Abercorn, Quebec on October 7, 2020, with the hopes of concluding on November 16.[7][8] To respect COVID-19 protocols and safety measures, the crew had to wear masks, practice social distancing, and receive frequent temperature measurements while working.[18][19] In an interview with Ici Radio-Canada Première, Farley stated that she didn't regret making the film in the midst of a global pandemic.[14]

Filming for North of Albany also took place in the city of Montreal, in locations such as the Laurentian Mountains, and in the Eastern Townships of Quebec.[5][20] Scenes and exterior shots were additionally filmed in Châteauguay, the Entrelacs, Lanaudière, Sutton, and in West Brome.[8][10] On October 6, 2020, CineGround revealed that director of photography Benoit Beaulieu and camera operator Benoît C. Gauthier used an ALEXA Mini LF camera with a Vintage Leica R lense to shoot the film.[21] Additionally, drone shots were filmed with the help of DroneStudio Canada, a filming company that specializes in aerial photography.[22]
