Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan (season 1)
Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan is an anime series adapted from the manga of the same title written and illustrated by Hiroshi Shiibashi. The anime series, produced by Studio Deen, aired from July 6 to December 21, 2010.[1]

The season uses four pieces of theme music: two opening themes and two ending themes. From episodes 1–12, the first opening theme is Fast Forward performed by Monkey Majik while the ending theme is Sparky☆Start performed by Katate Size (Aya Hirano, Yui Horie and Ai Maeda). From episodes 13–24, the second opening theme is Sunshine performed by Monkey Majik and the second ending theme is Symphonic Dream performed by Katate Size (Aya Hirano, Yui Horie and Ai Maeda).

Rikuo Nura is the grandson of Nurarihyon, and thus the Third Heir of the Nura Clan. However, being three fourths human, he does not act like the third heir. All of the yōkai of the Nura Clan want him to assume the leadership, but he just wants to be a normal human. His classmate Kiyotsugu invites Rikuo to come with them to the old school building that is said to be haunted by yōkai. They set out to investigate whether the building is really haunted by yōkai or not.[5] | ||||

An old ally of the Nura Clan visits to have a discussion about Rikuo's role as the future head of the Nura Clan. Zen is a yōkai with a weak constitution and a long-time supporter of the Nura Clan – their family has lent the Nura Clan their support in return for protection. He was also Rikuo's play-mate when he was little. Zen asks Rikuo about the leadership but he evades the question, explaining that he does not wish to become their leader and Zen leaves doubting the future of the Nura Clan. | ||||

A new student, Yura, joins Rikuo's class. She knows a lot about yōkai and can sense their presence. Rikuo's friends form a paranormal investigation group and decide to have the inaugural ceremony at Rikuo's house since they've heard rumors of it being haunted. Much comedy ensues while they explore his house against his wishes. It is revealed that Yura is an onmyōji when the group is attacked by a rat. When Kana and Yura head home they are attacked by a group of yōkai. | ||||

The head of the rat clan who kidnapped the girls lures Rikuo to his lair. There he demands that Rikuo write a letter abdicating his position as presumptive heir. On his way home Rikuo meets up with Ryota Neko, the head of the cat clan, who is being chased by minions of the rat clan. Once home he writes the letter that he has been ordered to while Ryota Neko sleeps. Upon hearing that Rikuo plans on giving up his position, Ryota Neko, despite being severely injured, heads off to fight. Rikuo, upon seeing this is moved and his night form takes over. After the battle, Yura promise to take down Night Rikuo. | ||||

Rikuo has taken ill following the overuse of his powers. Tsurara is nursing him back to health when his friends visit. Kana is confused about the nature of the relationship between Rikuo and Tsurara. Kiyotsugu informs Rikuo that the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol (including Yura ) are going on a trip. During the trip to the mountain Kana is still wondering about the relation between Rikuo and Oikawa. On reaching their destination Rikuo learns that the mountain is the domain of Gyuki – a member of his clan and the one responsible for trying to kill Rikuo. | ||||

Rikuo and his friends reach the mountain retreat. While the girls are in the onsen, Rikuo, the boys and Tsurara set off to look for spirits. Kana decides to follow them since she's jealous of the relationship between Rikuo and Tsurara. Meanwhile Gyuki orders his minions to kill them all. Mezuki with gyuki clansmen attempt to attack Natsumi and Saori but got interrupted by Yura. After being separated from the group, Tsurara is attacked. Just as she's about to be killed Rikuo saves her. | ||||

Yura is busy protecting the girls in the onsen when 3 new yōkai, introducing themselves as the three karasu, appear. They defeat the attackers in short order. Aotabo manages to find Rikuo's two friends and returns them to the inn. Meanwhile Rikuo fights Gozumaru, who tried to kill Tsurara. As Kana is walking up the stairs looking for Rikuo she's sees a ghostly light and gets scared but it turns out to be Rikuo carrying Tsurara. He leaves Tsurara with Kana and heads off to find Gyuki. | ||||

Gyuki's past is revealed. As a human he was once known as Umewakamaru, a noble child who excelled at everything. After his father died, his mother left him at a monastery. News of his mother's illness prompted Umewakamaru to want to see her. On the way he was tricked by demons into going the wrong way. There he found that his mother had been devoured by the yōkai, Gyuki. Umewakamaru went mad with grief and killed Gyuki and in his altered mental state he started killing other travelers. In time he also came to be known as Gyuki. It is then that Rikuo's grandfather, Nurarihyon, met him for the first time and after defeating Gyuki in battle requested that he join them as a member of their family. | ||||

Rikuo defeats Gyuki. Gyuki decides to commit suicide as atonement for going against the clan, but because he had the clan's best interest at heart, Rikuo stops him. At the next general meeting of the clan Rikuo announces his intention to succeed his grandfather and pardons Gyuki for his conduct. | ||||

When Kana was six she looked into a mirror possessed by a yōkai that promised to take her away on her thirteenth birthday. Kana becomes trapped in the mirror world but is able to tell her friends about her predicament through a spirit doll that was a gift from Kiyotsugu. Rikuo, in his night form, saves Kana at the last second. Kana, on the way home, now infatuated with Rikuo's night form, wants to know more about him. He takes her to a yōkai hangout. In the morning, Kana asks Rikuo if his night form is his friend. | ||||

Hihi, an elder of the Nura Clan, is killed while investigating an incident in Demon Cat Alley. Because of this Rikuo and the elders have to put up with more bodyguards. Nurarihyon encounters Yura while walking around town. Yura, who is experiencing a crisis in confidence about her beliefs, begins to open up to Nurarihyon. The assassin who killed Hihi attacks while they talk and Yura leaps to Nurarihyon's defense, thinking he is but a simple old man. | ||||

Nurarihyon kills the yōkai that attacked them while Yura is distracted. After the fight he disappears to look into this incident. While Rikuo is heading home he encounters Tamazuki, the figure behind all of the attacks. Tamazuki informs Rikuo of his plan to take over and destroy the Nura Clan. | ||||

While Tamazuki prepares to attack, Kiyotsugu tells the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol that he has made a discovery in his yōkai investigations – someone has been destroying shrines all over Ukiyoe Town. In one shrine Yura who arrived earlier than the Patrol went hiding in tree until they split up. While Rikuo and Oikawa discuss about the shrine destruction, Yura begin to suspect that Rikuo is having an affair. After the Patrol regroup she reminds Rikuo that "Thos who hunt two rabbits at one, don't even catch one". Meanwhile in Shikoku, Nurarihyon found Inugamigyobu-Tanuki, the Supreme Commander of Shikoku region. At night Jiro spot Sodemogi who tries to curse Kiyotsugu. Sodemogi is later saved by Tearai Oni and Inu Hou-Ou | ||||

As the battle progresses, Rikuo makes his way up towards Tamazaki. They spar but Rikuo is brought to his knees when one of Tamazaki's subordinates, Yosuzume, sneaks up and blinds him with her touch. Tamazaki asks Rikuo to join him, but he refuses. In rage, Tamazaki tries to kill Rikuo. Meanwhile, Tsurara, who has been searching for Rikuo since she lost track of at the beginning of the battle, arrives in the nick of time and blocks the blow. Yosuzume then touches Tsurara, blinding her as well as the rest of the battling yōkai. Though blinded, Tsurara and Rikuo work together to defeat Tamazaki's subordinates and Tsurara breaks the spell by freezing Yosuzume. | ||||

Rikuo and his clan continue to fight with the tenacious Shikoku yokai who are adamant in conquering Rikuo's Fear. The Shikoku yokai's leader, Tamazaki begins to mercilessly kill his own comrades with the Mao's Hammer in order to absorb their strengths and wield them as his own. Elsewhere, Inugami abducts Kana and holds her hostage, however, she is rescued and Tamazaki slaughters Inugami. This leads to a final showdown between Rikuo and his allies and Tamazaki, who now has acquired ultimate strength. | ||||
