Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies

Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies — Ukrainian research center founded in 2009 in the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. The center was founded in 2009 and named in honour of Omeljan Pritsak — famous Ukrainian medievalist and orientalist. It was founded to support Oriental studies activities and achievements in the university and Ukraine.[1]

History

In 2007, one year after Omeljan Pritsak death, his Memorial Cabinet was opened in NaUKMA.[1]

In 2007-2008, an extensive library and archive collection of Pritsak was brought to the NaUKMA. Earlier he made a pledge to transfer it to the university after his death. Thus the Memorial Library was founded and became a basis for the Research Center.[2]

In 2009, Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies was established.

During the period the Research Centre functions numerous academic events (memorial lectures and International Conferences in Memory of Omeljan Pritsak) were held. Research Center as well as the library and the archive collection are now open to the public.[1][3][4]

Memorial Library

The heritage, collected by Omeljan Pritsak for 70 years, contains manuscripts, printed editions, publications, historical sources, archival documents and artistic and cultural monuments on philosophy, linguistics, world history, Oriental Studies, Slavic Studies, Scandinavian Studies, archeology, numismatics etc.[5] His entire collection can be divided into three main categories:[2]

  • Archival collection — personal documents, epistolary collection, photos other materials.
  • Art collection — articles, decorative art, paintings and graphics, archaeological and numismatic materials, and a great collection of plates and DVDs. All of these things reflects scientific interests and aesthetic preferences of Pritsak.
  • The library collection — manuscripts, incunabula, reference and encyclopedia editions, monographs, periodicals, convolutes, Ukrainian classical literature, art editions, fictions in all European languages and over 20 Oriental languages. There are more than 20 thousand items, which are available through the electronic catalog.[6]

Partnership

Omeljan Pritsak Research Center for Oriental Studies partnered with The Ukrainian Association for Jewish Studies (UAJS).[7] The 2nd All-Ukrainian advanced training seminar “The Sounds of Jewish Music” was organized in partnership.[8]
