Orathy

Orathy is a village in Madurantakam taluk, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the most urbanized village of Kanchipram District but it is still primarily rural. There are more than 5000 inhabitants, and the village has an established caste system.

Religion

More than 80% of the village's population are Hindus. There are also Christians and Muslims in the village.

Caste system

The Brahmins of the highest caste are distinguishable by a white mark on their forehead. Their work was primarily confined to religious activities and astrological studies. They were almost wholly dependent on villages gifted to them by successive kings. The Brahmins way of life was marked by simple living and high thinking. Thuluva Vellalar took to a large scale agriculture, supervising large farms and earning income from the sale of the produce. The Shaanaars emerged as a prosperous mercantile community. The untouchables are the main agricultural laborers. The lower castes did the jobs assigned to them. In this village, there were also dhobis and barbers.

Temple

The powerful Temples are located at this Village. The grand festivals are getting celebrated by every year, it is the famous festival of the surrounding villages.

List of Temples in ORATHI Village:

 1.Lord Vinayagar Temple is located at the KULAKKARAI near to the Main Bus Stand of ORATHI where the Big Pond is Located.  Earlier the Vinayagar Temple has located at the Bank of Pond with Open Space and then shifted around 100 Meters away by constructing New Temple.
 2. Goddess Shri.Selliyamman Temple is located in the Northern Part of Village towards Annangal & Puragal Village's Side.  This Temple has been Newly Constructed by Mr.O.P.Chellappa, Ex.Chairman of Achirapakkam BDO.
 3.Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu Temples are located in the Bhiramin Street and both the Temples are actually situated more than 1000 Years which has constructed during Kings Period. Actually, the Both the Temples base Structures are Same and the Main Single Stone Pillers which are located at Entrance of both the Temples are same Structure and Size, this itself showsthat both the Temples might had constructed at the same time and Same King.  Vishnu Temple's New Main Gopuram has constructed in Year'2015 and 1000 Years Celebrated. Hope, the Old Structure of Shiva Temple has destroyed later Kings and recently around Year 1995, the New Temple Structure has Built only for Mulashthanam of Lord Shiva.  As per the History and the available Proofs, these Temples had the connectivity between the Old Temples of Veppankaranai Village which are still visible at the Forest Area, near the Big Mountain of Orathi Village.
 3. Goddess Mariyammam Temple is located at the entrance of "Kizhanda" Theru/Street (Old Name) on the Main Road itself.
 4. Goddess Thurowpathi Amman Temple is located at Naidu Street which is the very famous Temple. Once in 3 Years, the Festival is getting Celebrated for 22 Days.  All the Days, during Day Time Mahabradha Stories used to explained to the Villagers and the Night Time of the Day "Mahabharath Dramas" are used to conducted.  Being very famous festival, all the surrounding Villagers are used to attend these.
 5. Goddess Dhurgai Amman Temple is located at the Main Road near School Street.
 6. Goddess Puttalamman Temple is located at School Street, near Shiva Temple.
 7. Goddess Kanniyammans Temple is located near Old Cinema Thetre, near "Government Higher Secondary School", towards Orathi - Veppenkarai Road.

 8.Load Murugan Temple is situated at Orathi's Mountain around 700 Meters on Orathi - Veppenkaranai Road. The Temple is very much visible to see from Orathi Villages.

In this village Vanniyar caste peoples are biggest majority community.
