Owen Jones (December 29, 1819 – December 25, 1878) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania for one term from 1857 to 1859. After leaving Congress, he served as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War.

Biography

Owen Jones was born near Ardmore, Pennsylvania. He attended the public schools and was graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He studied law in Philadelphia, was admitted to the bar of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in 1842, and commenced practice in Ardmore.

Congress

Jones was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress. While in Congress, he served as chairman of the United States House Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1858.

Civil War

During the American Civil War, Jones raised a troop of cavalry that would become Company B of the 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. In 1862 Jones became Colonel of the regiment and would lead it until he resigned his commission in January 1863.

He resumed the practice of law, and died near Ardmore. Interment in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.[1]
