Paul Kasmin Gallery

Paul Kasmin Gallery also known as Kasmin Gallery is a New York City fine art gallery, founded in SoHo in 1989.[1]

History

In 1981, with two close friends — Jasper Morrison and Danny Moynihan — Kasmin established The Space, a gallery of primarily contemporary figurative art in the Kensington Market area of London. After one season, he returned to private dealing. In 1985, Kasmin and Moynihan opened Credo, an office in Moynihan’s parents’ house in London, from which they dealt privately in photography. They moved the business to New York's SoHo district in 1988.[2]

Today's Kasmin Gallery was founded by Paul Kasmin at 74 Grand Street in SoHo in 1989.[3] The gallery moved to Chelsea in 2000.[4]

In 2007, Kasmin Gallery gave the first New York exhibition in nearly 30 years to the furniture-sculpture of the French artists Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne; he went on to show designers like Ron Arad, Mattia Bonetti, David Wiseman and Jasper Morrison.[5]

Since 2018, Kasmin Gallery's 3,000 square feet (280 square metres) flagship gallery (and 5,000 square feet (460 square metres) rooftop sculpture garden) has been located at 509 West 27th Street, under Chelsea's High Line park. It was designed by StudioMDA.[6] At one point, the gallery operated four exhibition spaces along one block of West 27th Street near 10th Avenue.[7]

In 2019, Kasmin Gallery closed one of its leased spaces at 515 West 27th Street. That same year, it was scheduled to open a new venue at 514 West 28th Street again designed by StudioMDA, with 3,400 square feet (320 square metres) of private viewing room and office space and 460 square feet (43 square metres) of public exhibition space.[8]

Paul Kasmin died on March 23, 2020, at the age of 60 following a long illness.[9] He was the son of the noted British art dealer John Kasmin.[10]
