Pixabay.com is a website for sharing photos, illustrations, vector graphics, film footage and music, exclusively under the custom Pixabay license, a modified and somewhat more restrictive version of the Creative Commons CC0 license.[1][2][3]

In November 2018, Pixabay was acquired by the Australian design and publishing platform Canva.[4]

History

The site was founded in November 2010 in Ulm, Germany by Hans Braxmeier and Simon Steinberger.[5] In March 2012, Pixabay was redesigned, switching from a personal image collection into an interactive online community. In 2015, Pixabay started offering film footage in addition to images.

On 9 January 2019, Pixabay left CC0[6] and changed its license to the "Pixabay License", which prohibits the sale of unaltered copies of the licensed works, or distribution as stock images or wallpapers.[7]

Description

On Pixabay, users can find and contribute images and video clips. For uploading files and downloading full sized images, registration is required. By uploading files, the contributors waive their copyright and related image rights. All uploaded images are checked manually by Pixabay's staff members.

The overall quality of the photos on the service has been described as "mediocre for the most part"[8] and "variable" but covering a "wide range of subjects".[9]
