Rajib Karmakar

Rajib Karmakar is a Los Angeles-based Sitar player, recording artist, composer and educator of Indian classical music and World music originally from Bengal, India.[4] He is a solo artist and also currently a member of the musical projects HUM Ensemble and Wahh World Fusion is additionally a frequent collaborator with the international bands Fuzorhythm (India), Loop Science (Germany) and Nada Naissance (France).[5][6] He has performed in the countries of India, the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, and others.[7][8]

Karmakar received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Music from California Institute of the Arts[9] and is the founder and current director of the Los Angeles International Music and Arts Academy (LAIMA).[8] He is the inventor of the Mayur Tantri, the world first double-necked Electric Sitar.[10]

Early life

Born into a musical family of Bengal, Rajib is a third generation musician. He received a Sitar on his first birthday and actually began learning to play at the age of four from his father, musician and conductor Sri Durgadas Karmakar. He gave his first public performance at the age of six, and at the age of 8 performed in front of a large audience for the first time (10,000 people), as the opening act for his father's seventy-piece orchestra. Later, at the age of 12 he performed in the All India Radio.[11]

He then began to study with his first sitar guru Ustad Ghulam Akbar Khan for a period of eight years. And after making an official decision not to attend engineering school and pursue the life career of a musician enrolled in Banaras Hindu University. There he met his next Sitar Guru, Pandit Ram Dass Chakrabarty, staying with him under the Guru–shishya tradition, (an ancient tradition where the disciple goes to live and learn from his teacher). Karmakar was there for six years, often required to practice the sitar for up to 14 hours a day. From then on, he began to be invited to play regularly in Europe and was exposed to many elements of world music.
