Robert and Cortney Novogratz

Robert and Cortney Novogratz, known collectively as The Novogratz, are an American husband and wife design team based in Los Angeles since 2014. They began their careers in Manhattan in real estate. They have become interior and product designers, and have been featured on reality TV. They are also the parents of seven children. Their shows are Bravo's 9 by Design and HGTV's Home by Novogratz.

Early life

Robert grew up in Alexandria, VA (b. February 11, 1963) and attended public schools. He has long been a sports enthusiast. Cortney was born in Columbus Georgia (b. September 8, 1971) and also attended public schools. Both were from large families and had parents who were decorating enthusiasts.

The couple met in Charlotte, North Carolina. They moved together to New York City, where they married and first worked in real estate. Through this work, they gradually developed more practice and ideas about design, and began to be hired to create interior spaces.

Career

They initially managed the renovation of run-down properties in Manhattan, in order to sell them at a profit. As they got more involved in the design aspect of renovations, they began to develop some characteristics: the use of distinctive architectural details, unique interior finishes, and staging with rare collectibles found while travelling to flea markets around the world.

They are known for their distinctive style, which mixes vintage/modern high/low pieces. One of their featured projects is 5 Centre Market Place. It was converted from a former gun shop and is located on the edge of Soho. The couple renovated and designed two properties on Thompson Street in Soho as well. Their design firm is called Sixx Design.

In the fall of 2014, they moved to Los Angeles. They bought and renovated a home in the Hollywood Hills.

The Novogratzes design private residences for A-list clients, and also boutique hotels. They designed Hotel Dylan, LULU's at the W Hoboken, Bungalow Hotel, and Timber Cove. The Novogratzes recently completed a children's space at Ten Thousand, a luxury apartment building in Beverly Hills, California. They are working on a 250-unit condominium in East Boston, Massachusetts.

The Novogratzes have developed product lines that they sell through CB2, The Shade Store, Walmart, Wayfair, Amazon, and Overstock.

Personal life

Robert and Cortney have seven children, including Wolfgang Novogratz.

Downtown Chic

In May 2009 Robert and Cortney published their first book, Downtown Chic. It features their style, and they offer suggestions to readers about how to create original interiors. They also include anecdotes about renovation.

They published their second book, Home by Novogratz (2012), which included international distribution. They featured twenty of their favorite projects, and note that thrift-store finds can contribute to an overall design.

They published their third book, Beachside Bohemian in 2016.
