Roberta Bayley

Roberta Bayley is an American photographer. She's known for her photographs of New York punk scene.[1]

Life

Bayley grew up in California[2] and attended San Francisco State University for three years before dropping out in 1971.[3][1] She then lived in London for three years. Bayley moved to New York in the spring of 1974.[4]

Bayley dated Richard Hell,[4] who got her a job working at CBGB.[1] She then got a job working for Peter Leeds, the manager of the band Blondie. While Bayley had taken a few photography classes in high school,[5] it wasn't until 1975 when she bought a camera to document what she saw going on in New York at the time.[1]

In 1976, she photographed the Ramones for Punk Magazine. The image became the cover of the band's first album.[6] Apparently the record label had initially hired a different photographer, but rejected his photos and instead selected Bayley's image.[7] Bayley served as chief phogorapher for Punk Magazine.[8]

In addition to her images of the Ramones, Bayley is known for her pictures of Debbie Harry of Blondie, The New York Dolls, The Heartbreakers, and Lester Bangs.[7]

Bayley still lives in New York's East Village.[4][9] In addition to several monographs of her work, her photographs have been published in seminal histories of punk including Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk and Blank Generation Revisited: The Early Days of Punk.[3]
