It was photographed by ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions) in 1950, and was sighted and mapped by the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains surveys of 1969 and 1971. It was named by the Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) for M.J.M. Robertson, a geophysicist at Mawson Station in 1970, who took part in the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains survey in 1971.
